**Job Summary:**
Support the Language Nest Program in activities inside and outside the classroom, developing a learning environment among students and teaching staff based on Okanagan values, culture, and traditions.
**Job Description:**
The Language Nest Assistant supports the Language Nest Program in activities inside and outside the classroom. The position assists in developing a learning environment among students and teaching staff based on Okanagan values, culture, and traditions.
**Responsibilities:**
- Assists the Okanagan Language Nest team and Language Nest Elders in delivering basic oral Okanagan language through various techniques.
- Assists the Okanagan Language Nest team with the organization of materials.
- Assists/leads with small group instruction under the direction of the Language Nest Coordinator.
- Supports cultural activities such as berry picking, plant identification, and introduction to safe hunting and fishing practices and techniques.
- Assists in managing classroom expectations through positive reinforcement.
- Acts as a positive role model for behavior; practicing respectful child/adult/elder interactions.
- Supervises outside play, while on fieldtrips, and assists in other supervision duties as required.
- Manages incidents involving Language Nest participants to ensure children have a safe and secure environment.
- Clears Language Nest and outside surroundings of debris to ensure safety.
- Develops and maintains a good working relationship with parents.
- Healthy meal/snack planning and preparing.
- Performs other duties as required.
**Administrative Duties:**
- Attends staff meetings and professional development day training as required.
- Communicates to team any pertinent information regarding children, parents, staff, program, etc.
- Communicates with the Language Nest Coordinator regarding child incidents.
- Participates in community events as requested.
- Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the OKIB policies and procedures.
**Requirements:**
- Grade 12 diploma.
- Certified Education Assistant considered an asset.
- Current First Aid/CPR certificate.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
- Fluency in the Okanagan language, or active language learner.
- Experience working with infant to age 5 children and their parents.
- Experience working with First Nations communities.

**Classification/Pay Scale:** $26.00 per hour dependant on education and experience.
