Project Controller Job Description

Stantec is seeking a highly skilled Project Controller to join our Transportation Business Line in Markham, Ontario. As a Project Controller, you will play a critical role in providing financial and change management support on scope, schedule, and cost throughout the life cycle of projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and analyze project forecasts, including project schedule and costs, and communicate results to upper-level management.
  • Assist project managers with budget preparation for new projects and change orders, and review WIP/AR and monthly invoices.
  • Monitor project progress to evaluate potential financial risks and ensure financial health and proper tracking in accordance with standards.
  • Review and provide strategic analysis of financial statements and provide commentary on required troubleshooting to improve financial results.
  • Perform project internal audits and financial reconciliations, and review newly created projects with the internal financial system.
  • Support development, administration, and monitoring of project sub-consultant agreements.
  • Liaise between project technical leads and project managers to monitor and control project resourcing and accounting.
  • Assist project managers with compliance of Stantec and ISO standards for Project Management, including participation in audits.
Qualifications:
  • Strong understanding of project controls concepts and ability to communicate ideas to others.
  • Thorough understanding of project accounting, accrual collection, and cost-based accounting.
  • Solid understanding of principles and methods related to Earned Value Management (EAC, ETC, CPI, VAC, etc.).
  • Ability to multi-task, manage time, organize, and set priorities and make timely decisions.
  • Self-motivated, proactive individual with a strong work ethic, capable of prioritizing and communicating to multiple groups.
  • Able to adapt quickly to changing work demands without compromising accuracy and quality of work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications, along with strong problem-solving and analytical skills (including attention to detail).
  • Positive attitude, with the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Proficient in MS Office skills, with advanced skills in MS Excel (Pivots, V-Lookups, SUMIFS, etc.). Experience with Financial/Cost systems (Oracle, Prolog, etc.) is preferred.
  • Prior work in project controls/senior project accounting role is a plus.
Education and Experience:
  • Four-year (or equivalent) accounting, business, or related degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience performing financial analysis, cost management, scheduling, and other project controls functions over the life cycle of a project.
