The Opportunity
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Indigenous Community Planner to join our Planning team. Reporting to the Planning Manager, the Indigenous Community Planner will support the needs of the indigenous communities in the areas of community planning, land use planning, Indigenous consultation and engagement and community engagement.

The successful candidate will be eligible for MCIP/RPP membership or have full membership, possess in-depth knowledge within one or more planning specialties such as economic development, master planning, development planning, urban design, or environmental planning. First-hand knowledge and experience of First Nations culture and history is a strong asset.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage, negotiate, and direct coordination with outside agencies.
  • Interpret and apply applicable local bylaws, and regulations.
  • Initiate any action necessary to correct deficiencies or violations of regulations.
  • Conduct review of various development applications including surveys, permits, site plans, variance requests and rezoning.
  • Manage and direct subconsultants.
  • Develop, maintain, and adjust project schedules (small to medium).
  • Advise Client and outside agencies on delays.
  • Overall design review and analysis confirmation.
  • Review cost estimates.
  • Provide design advice to Client.
  • Negotiate with approving agencies in relaxation of design requirements or acceptance of alternate design options.
  • Conduct site visits, when needed.
  • Complete review, evaluation and finalize of basic technical writing.
  • Write, review, and present formal and technical reports, proposals, and correspondence.
  • Identify community problems, issues, and opportunities that could affect project outcomes.
  • Assist with creation of long-range plans for communities with common developmental issues.
  • Chair and attend meetings with Clients, subconsultants, and outside agencies.
  • Client representation public hearing/council meetings.


Typical Knowledge

  • Well-developed knowledge of planning principles and practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of one or more specializations, such as economic development, land-use, community plan, consultation, First Nation, transportation planning, or environmental planning.
  • First-hand knowledge and experience of First Nations culture and history is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of principles, methodology, practices of research and data collection.
  • Knowledge of effective writing techniques.
  • Knowledge of or experience in community remediation and redevelopment, and knowledge of relevant Provincial programs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet applications, econometric or transportation modeling, database management, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, GIS or mapping software.


Typical Skills

  • Oral communication and interpersonal skills to present research findings to various stakeholders.
  • Problem-solving skills to gather information to solve less well- defined practical problems.
  • Ability to review plans and apply provisions of the bylaws and regulations to determine compliance with such regulations and to apply regulations to field conditions.
  • Group facilitation skills for use with community workshops.
  • Able to work independently or in a team environment as needed.
  • Able to attend to details while keeping big-picture goals in mind.


Minimum Qualifications

  • A master's degree in urban planning or economics with 5 to 7 years of relevant experience
  • MCIP/RPP eligibility is required, full designation preferred.


Compensation
The salary range for this position is $70,00 to $95,000 per year, commensurate with experience, skillsets, and qualifications.
