The Opportunity

We are currently looking to fill several positions for Transmission Planning Engineers, Engineer in Training to Specialist Engineer depending on level of experience and credentials. The Transmission Planning Engineers will support the Nova Scotia Power Transmission Planning Group within System Planning and will work closely with Transmission Capital Management, Technical and Construction Services, and the Nova Scotia Power System Operator to ensure that system studies are completed in a timely manner and to ensure that reliability obligations are met.

The position will concentrate on the integration of renewable energy onto the Nova Scotia grid and large area transmission system planning studies related to load growth and large load connections. The position will also support completion of interconnection customer system studies related to generation interconnections and large load connections.

Experience with RMS or EMT modelling software, Protection and Control and strong programming and logic skills would be considered a key differentiator for this role. Knowledge of generation control systems and modelling is desirable (synchronous and inverter based). The Transmission Planning Engineer will work with interconnection customers and other stakeholders to ensure that study inputs and scope are appropriate and accurate. The Transmission Planning Engineer should have strong verbal and written communication skills, as report writing is integral to this position.



Key elements of this role include:

  • Complete PSSE and PSCADTM EMT load flow, dynamics and EMT training as required and develop study analysis skills
  • Perform System Impact studies for transmission and load interconnection requests within Nova Scotia.
  • Complete Transmission Planning studies as required to evaluate and optimize transmission infrastructure to meet generation, reliability, and load requirements
  • Support Factory Acceptance and Commissioning Testing for IBR resources
  • Develop and deliver training on new control strategies and operation of a grid with a high penetration of IBR
  • Support long term planning exercises such as Nova Scotia Power's Integrated Resource Plan (IRP)
  • Support compliance and reliability obligations as assigned (internal and external)
  • Analyze historical data and prepare and distribute reporting as required
  • Be willing to participate in NPCC and NERC reliability task forces and working groups if requested
  • Join and support the analysis of industry technical working groups, representing Nova Scotia Power
  • Provide technical support for other groups within NSPI
  • Keep abreast of industry development, standards, regulations, codes
  • Contribute to a work environment based on mutual trust and respect while carrying out all work in a safe and effective manner

  • The successful candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a P.Eng. designation (or be eligible to obtain P.Eng. designation in Nova Scotia).
  • At least 1-4 years of related work experience preferred. Experience in electrical utility / industry transmission planning environments is desirable and advanced degrees will be considered during the application process. Engineers in Training will also be considered.
  • The ideal candidate has demonstrated strong organizational skills, is a team player, possess a high level of initiative, has good oral and written communication skills, and works well under pressure.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Previous experience with RMS or EMT modelling software is a key differentiator for this role.
  • Previous experience with transmission planning studies or Protection and Control would be an asset.
  • The ideal candidate will have exemplary interpersonal skills and be able to build relationships with key engineering, technical, and management staff.
  • You must be able to function effectively in a team environment, but also be able to work independently.
  • You are a self-starter with proven organizational and analytical skills and are comfortable managing multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously.
  • You must demonstrate your commitment to personal development.
  • Some travel is required. You must also be available to support emergency power restoration work in an assigned storm role which may be different from your normal position.
