Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Support Worker to join our team at The Salvation Army Bailey House. As a Support Worker, you will play a vital role in providing resident support services, on-site supervision, and security for our facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide resident support services, including assisting with personal care concerns, providing supplies as required, and interacting positively with residents.
  • Assist Caseworkers as needed and respond to medical emergencies within the facility.
  • Regularly report to case workers concerning resident behaviors and immediately report critical incidents to the on-call supervisor or Bailey House Coordinator.
  • Admit and discharge residents according to the Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Provide site management and security throughout the shift, including monitoring cameras, locking doors, and using the alarm system.
  • Ensure resident guests are signed in and out within curfew hours and monitor resident day plans.
  • Complete regular rounds and head counts to ensure all residents are accounted for according to policy and procedure.
  • Complete room checks and building checks as per policy and procedure.
  • Monitor security screens and respond as appropriate.
  • Complete room searches as directed by Caseworkers or Bailey House Coordinator.
  • Ensure residents do not exceed their allowable limit of personal effects and itemize and pack up clients' personal effects when they are removed from the facility.
  • Assist with the general upkeep and maintenance of the Bailey House.
  • Respond to hourly radio checks and radio requests for assistance in other departments as appropriate.
Administrative Support
  • Document and report writing, including completing records/forms such as Client Medication, Incident reports, and Occurrence Reports.
  • General Reception duties, including answering the telephone and relaying messages to clients and other departments as required.
  • Sending email messages as required and completing filing duties, including preparing new files, archiving old files, and retrieving archived files when there are returning clients.
  • Maintaining accurate client records and database entries, including case notes, behavior, medications, intakes, discharges, etc.
  • Responding to requests from other departments within the NWT Resource Centre where feasible.
  • Attending all scheduled staff meetings and maintaining current understanding of policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining healthy working relationships with NWT Resource Centre staff, Bailey House staff, allied professionals, and other referral parties.
  • Relaying pertinent information related to client concerns, operational issues, community issues, etc. promptly to appropriate personnel.
  • Following formal lines of communication as identified by The Salvation Army organizational structure.
  • Other duties as assigned by Bailey House Coordinator or his designate.
Requirements
  • Post-Secondary Education or related experience in Social Services.
  • High School Graduate.
  • First Aid.
  • Verbal Judo and/or NVCI.
  • Suicide Intervention.
  • WHMIS.
  • Mental Health First Aid.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check.

  • Ability to work within the mandate of and embrace the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • The ability to respond appropriately, decisively, and effectively in crisis situations and in a stressful environment.
  • Effective interpersonal communication in English, both written and oral.
  • Effective assessment, observation, and recording skills.
  • Implement policy and procedures.
  • Ability to work within a teamwork structure, though will be required to work alone.
  • Effective interviewing skills.
  • Understanding of Aboriginal and Inuit Cultures, Addictions, Mental Health, and other social issues.
  • Computer skills are required.
Working Conditions

The work environment can be fast-paced and demanding. The need to be constantly aware of the environment and the movements and attitudes of individual clients can be stressful. There is a potential to work with aggressive, high-risk clients in this position.
