The Quantum City Business & Industry Engagement Team in the Office of VP Research invites applications for a Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 33 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The University of Calgary (UCalgary) is creating a vibrant quantum economic and scientific hub based in Calgary, Quantum City is leveraging the leading quantum science and technology programs of Campus Alberta institutions and a burgeoning UCalgary innovation ecosystem.Reporting to the Managing Director, Quantum City, the Manager, Quantum City Business & Industry Engagement works 35 hours per week.

With the approval of the Managing Director, Quantum City, the incumbent will be responsible for the overall business & industry engagement of the Quantum City initiative. The incumbent will work closely with a variety of high-profile external stakeholders, along with the community and government. A critical role for the Quantum City initiative, the Manager will advance Quantum City's innovation, talent generation, and infrastructure agendas.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Business & Industry Engagement

  • Lead and conduct industry engagement and marketing activities; promote Quantum City and its capabilities to on and off-campus stakeholder groups.
  • Develop strategies to increase the engagement and visibility of Quantum City's innovation and talent generation capabilities, including a research and innovation facility, such as publicity material, attending events and meetings to promote Quantum City.
  • Present specialized, technical information to internal and/or external stakeholders.
  • Provide clients with information and advice about Quantum City's programs and services.
  • Work closely with the Managing Director.
    • Support existing industry alliances and establish new alliances through sourcing of new partnerships, resulting in hiring of interns/trainees/grads, pilot projects, etc.
    • Grow relationships with prospective partners/clients.
    • Develop proposals in collaboration with industry partners.
    • Ensure all obligations outlined in the agreement are met at the project and alliance levels.
    • Support strategies for outreach and engagement.
    • Develop and run a corporate membership model for Quantum City.
    • Develop and support a user model at qHub, Quantum City's new collision space.
    • Support qConnect, Quantum City's annual conference for quantum creators and potential users.
    • Support Quantum City Challenges, including securing corporate sponsorship and engaging quantum solution providers to support overall portfolio management activities.

Leadership

  • Responsible for hiring, training, performance management and development, and disciplinary action up to and including termination of staff.
  • Provide proactive quality leadership by developing and maintaining positive working relationships.
  • Engage with key stakeholders, understand the impact on both internal and external stakeholders and manages risks and benefits accordingly.
  • Develop and execute a business and industry engagement strategy to support Quantum City's mission.
  • Represent Quantum City and the University of Calgary in the community with professionalism and integrity.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • BSc or higher; MBA is preferred.
  • 5+ years of business development/industry engagement experience relevant to innovation ecosystem building.
  • 5 years of leadership experience.
  • 5 years of project management experience.
  • An extraordinary ability to multi-task effectively and efficiently.
  • Able to track projects over time at varying degrees of detail.
  • Demonstrated understanding of (preferably in quantum) research and innovation ecosystem in Alberta and Canada.
  • Expert communication and negotiation skills.
  • Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Strong analytical skills as well as networking/public relations skills.
  • Must be able to present the interests of Quantum City in a professional manner and must be able to effectively deal with a wide variety of representatives and stakeholders across a broad spectrum of industries and other organizations.
