Job Profile

There are two permanent openings for the above positions within the Planning Services Division of the Community Development Department available immediately. Reporting to the Manager of Development Planning, this position is responsible for the following duties:

What you will be doing
  • Manages development applications, including Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendments, Plans of Subdivision, Plans of Condominium, MESP's and Site Plans.
  • Reviews and appraises applications for completeness, circulates appropriate comments, identifies issues, and prepares recommendation reports to Committees and Council, including appropriate conditions, based on all input and sound planning practices.
  • Co-ordinates comments and resolves conflicts for complex development proposals with competing interests/stakeholders.
  • Reviews and ensures all notices for new applications, including notices for statutory public meetings are completed.
  • Interprets the Official Plan, Zoning By-law and other Planning Legislation and prepares detailed appraisals, including diverse and complex issues brought forward by other departments and/or agencies.
  • Drafts Official Plan and Zoning Amendments by-laws, subdivision agreements and other legal documents for adoption and execution by Council and the City Clerk.
  • Provides planning advice and options to other staff and Council, applicants, the public, developers, realtors, consultants, etc.
  • Attends various Committee meetings to provide planning advice, update status of applications or processes, resolve issues, etc. Makes presentations to Committees, BIA's, Council, neighborhood meetings and special interest groups on various developments, or other matters
  • Act as an expert witness at the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT)
  • Participates as a Planning representative on policy and special projects.
  • Acts as a liaison between departments, agencies, consultants, etc.
  • Provides back-up to the Manager of Development Planning.
Education Undergraduate Level - Four years or equivalent in Planning or SimilarExperience and Knowledge
  • Four to six years progressive planning experience. Expertise in Urban Design preferred.
  • Possession of current memberships in the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Ontario Professional Planners Institute are also required, along with a Registered Professional Planner and valid Drivers' License is required.

The Senior Planner position is within Grade 14 of the inside workers union Salary Schedule and has an annual salary range of $103,012 to $109,473. Comprehensive Benefits Package and OMERS Pension Plan included.

Hours of work

The current regular hours of work are in accordance with the collective agreement, however, currently are 8:30am to 4:30pm. (35 hours per week), Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings as required.
