Trades II - Gardener

The City of Vancouver is seeking a skilled Trades II Gardener to join our team of dedicated professionals in maintaining the beauty and functionality of our parks and green spaces.

About the Role: As a Trades II Gardener, you will be responsible for performing skilled horticultural work at the journeyman level in high-profile park settings. You will be responsible for the care and development of assigned areas, supervising staff, and ensuring the maintenance of ornamental park and sports areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and perform skilled horticulture work in propagating, planting, spraying, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing, and renovating floral displays, shrub beds, and lawns.
  • Supervise and participate in the work of one or more assistants engaged in parks horticultural and maintenance tasks.
  • Prepare estimations, order materials, tools, and equipment, and coordinate with suppliers and other City departments.
  • Maintain routine records related to the work and perform related work as required.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 and a recognized apprenticeship in Horticulture, or equivalent experience.
  • Considerable experience in gardening and some experience in laying out areas for track and field sports.
  • A valid Pesticide Applicator License, as required for some positions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of horticultural methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of plant material and tree care.
  • Ability to cope with a wide variety of problems involved in the maintenance and supervision of ornamental park and sports areas.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks throughout the year.
