Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse

Fraser Health is seeking a highly skilled Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse to join our Inpatient Psychiatry Unit. As a key member of our interprofessional care team, you will provide and coordinate the delivery of psychiatric nursing care services to patients. Your expertise and clinical leadership will be essential in promoting person-centered and recovery-oriented care.
Responsibilities- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for assigned patients, identifying actual or potential problems and strengths through nursing diagnosis.
- Participate in and support the total therapeutic program of the Unit, actively engaging with patients and families to promote their well-being.
- Collect and analyze information from various sources to inform nursing decisions, using skills of observation, communication, and physical assessment.
- Document timely and accurate reports of relevant assessments and observations, including patient and family education and evaluation of nursing care.
- Communicate effectively with the healthcare team, setting priorities, assigning, and delegating tasks to support staff, and participating in interprofessional conferences.
- Advocate for patients' rights to autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity, and access to information, promoting a safe and inclusive environment.
- Contribute to quality improvement activities and research by identifying patient care issues and collecting data, and participate in nursing and hospital committees to enhance patient care and work environment.
- Provide education and mentorship to nursing staff and students, identifying self-learning needs and attending educational programs to maintain and enhance clinical competency.
- Maintain a safe environment for patients, families, and staff by adhering to established safety and emergency practices and procedures.
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). May require completion of a substance use certificate program.
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to complete initial and ongoing mental health and substance use client assessments and provide nursing care through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety-type interventions, including crisis intervention.
- Knowledge of mental illness and substance use treatment, psychopharmacology, and legislation and government policies and procedures related to mental health and substance use practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with patients, families/caregivers, the public, medical staff, and members of the interprofessional care team.
- Ability to promote person-centered care, demonstrating empathy for patients/families/caregivers, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, and advocacy for special populations.
- Ability to educate patients and families/caregivers about topics essential to their health care and well-being.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work, collaborate with and promote cooperation among members of the interprofessional care team, and use factual information and basic principles and procedures to support nursing decisions and actions with relevant research-based evidence/evidence-informed practice.
- Ability to operate related equipment, including relevant computer applications, and physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
