As a Field Piping Designer / Mechanical Engineering Technologist you have a very strong understanding of the work and information flow among disciplines to coordinate multi-discipline designs. As a field construction team member, you will be a key influencer in final decisions. Your success will support the execution of approximately 200 capital and expense projects we have each year at our Saint John, NB, refinery as well as land and marine terminals in Canada, the US eastern seaboard and Ireland.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Work on complex piping projects including development, maintenance, research and installation.
  • Production of piping engineering drawings and model shot compilation. Ensuring design meets the needs of other stakeholders.
  • Coordinating and squad-checking of drawings with other engineering disciplines.
  • Ensure layouts conform to functional requirements, standards and specifications.
  • Training and mentorship of more junior Designers, if applicable.
  • Work on design concept reviews; work with different 3D review techniques and cross functional teams to find the best solution.
    Perform field visits to collect measurements and other field data.
  • Prepare Engineering Work Packages (EWOs), Bills of Material (BOMs), effort hour estimates, materials estimates, other cost estimates, construction schedules, Scopes of Work (SOWs), Scopes of Services (SOSs) for complex projects.
  • Coordinate the overall planning of the detailing approach and work with construction team to define and re-define the scope of work for complex projects.
  • Monitor and inspect construction operations to ensure compliance to engineering design, site standards, and specifications.
  • Complete field punches of Engineering Work Packages.
  • Answer Field Change Notification (FCN) and Request for Information (RFI).

Your Skills:

  • Strong technical report writing skills.
  • Expert in AutoCad, MicroStation, and Navisworks and able to run model reviews and create model shot packages for construction team.
  • Able to develop, read and interpret engineering drawings and review and understand vendor technical drawings.
  • Sound knowledge of common engineering / design concepts, constructability and best practices.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; along with strong time management skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.
  • This position requires you to spend time in the field, so you must be able to work in a heavy industrial setting (sometimes at elevation) and wear any required PPE.

Your Experience:

  • 5-10 years of experience as a Field Piping Designer, preferably with refinery and petrochemical experience.
  • 5 years of experience working in an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction).
  • Post-secondary education in engineering technology or design is an asset.
  • NBSCETT certified, or eligible in the province of NB, is an asset.
