DUTIES:
Reporting to a Public Service Manager or designate, this position will require the successful candidate to work with the literacy team to provide and maintain a program based on the bilingual/bicultural model to deaf learners, and become familiar with literacy resources, particularly with high-interest, low-level materials. You will be required to understand the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development of Ontario guidelines set forth for literacy under the Deaf Stream and ensure that the 5 Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) Services are followed. Will be expected to teach Deaf learners English/ASL Literacy, introduce employment resources and preparation, numeracy and computer literacy to assist learners in meeting their employment, education and personal goals. Develop learning activities and lesson plans as required to meet learners' needs. Responsible for maintaining learner attendance records; ensuring that all learner's training plans are kept up to date and that appropriate information is recorded in a timely fashion. The Deaf Literacy instructor will demonstrate the highest standard of ethical conduct and confidentiality. Will also perform Occupational Health and Safety duties as outlined in the Corporate Health & Safety Program. Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must have a university degree in the Social Sciences field, preferably in the field of Education or Disability Studies or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and a minimum of one (1) year experience teaching in the literacy field and/or adult education;

• Must be fluent in ASL and English, especially written;

• Ability to assist individuals with goal-setting;

• Must have excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills;

• Must have demonstrable technology proficiency in areas such as MS Office Suite of Products, educational applications, Internet, tablets, SMART Board;

• Must demonstrate flexibility to adapt curriculum to meet individual needs;

• Must have strong communication skills to deliver comprehensive and effective lessons to meet the needs of the learner;

• Preference will be given to those who have experience in adult literacy training;

• Must have the ability to travel to off-site locations in a timely and expedient manner as required. If method of travel is by vehicle, a current, valid and lawful Driver's License is required in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and must provide a driver's abstract as a condition of employment;

• A Physical Demands analysis will be completed with the incumbent after approximately six months of occupying the position.
