Tunnel Foreman Job Description

Aecon is seeking a Tunnel Foreman to lead a team of site operatives in the safe and efficient execution of tunnel boring machine operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive quality, efficiency and productivity of work crews; and will document reporting of and maintaining in good repair all company owned and rented tools, equipment and assets.
  • Responsible for scheduling, co-ordinating and supervising the work of all site operatives, ensuring that all work is delivered safely on time and within budget along with managing equipment and materials required.
  • Accurately record and communicate the hours worked and operational issues.
  • Operate and promote safe working on site.
  • Ensure all works are carried out in line with approved method statements.
  • Conduct and amend risk assessments and deliver toolbox talks/briefings.
  • Ensure site personnel have job relevant training requirements which is entered on site personnel training register.
  • Lead by example to others on site.
  • Ensure workers complete all required documentation.
  • Track and document daily work productions.
  • Equipment and materials management.
  • Assist the TBM Superintendent in promoting communication throughout the tunnel team.
  • Responsible for supervising TBM Operators who maintain the line and grade of the tunnel according to the tunnelling guidance system.
  • Ensure TBM operators maintain the designed parameters of the TBM, face pressures and operate within manufacturers' guidelines and approved methods.
  • Responsible for supervising the erector operator who will erect segmental lining according to the building tolerance specified in the contract.
  • Responsible for implementing the annular grouting procedure behind the segmental lining. Secondary grouting as required.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Secondary School or equivalent; practical training, classroom or simulation; and working knowledge of English.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and aware of the meaning of 'Supervisor' under OSHA.
  • MOL's required basic supervisory safety awareness training.
  • 2-3 years experience with Tunnel Boring Machine operations.
  • 2-3 years experience with Slurry TBM.
  • 2-3 years experience in tunneling with concrete segment lining, 6.0 m. diameter.
  • 2-3 years' experience with Herrenknecht equipment.

Compensation and Benefits

  • $53 per hour. Shift workers will receive a shift premium in addition to their regular hourly rate.
  • 37.5 hours/week and subject to overtime.
  • Employees/Members of Local 183 receive Vacation & Statutory Holiday Pay, Health & Welfare Benefits, Pension etc. for a Total Wage Package of $76.55 per hour (not including Supervisor Premium).

Working Conditions and Environment

  • Primary work location at a construction site in Ontario with work and travel required throughout the province.
  • Project, training and business-related travel may be required.
  • Exposure to construction work site environment in all seasons.
  • Relocation within Canada may be required. Relocation costs covered by employer.
