Sanitation Technician

Job Summary
Responsible for all activities involved in maintaining the cleanliness and food safe environment of the processing facility, surrounding area and equipment. Work shall be performed both indoors and outdoors; in a food processing plant with a high noise level, storage coolers/facilities and in an office environment. Position requires working around processing plant equipment. Must be physically capable of working extended hours (as needed) in a wet and/or cold environment, working outdoors, standing for long periods of time, and operating processing equipment.

Relationships and Contacts
Plant Sanitation reports to the Sanitation Supervisor.

Major Responsibilities

• Ability to identify potential hazards

• Ensure the plant meets Irving Standards (interior/exterior premises plant sanitation)

• Daily inspecting and maintaining of equipment

• Open communication with peers and support groups (upstream/downstream, process engineers, mechanics, technicians, QA, etc.)

• Update daily management boards and documents

• Follow all practices, policies, procedures, and manufacture specifications

• Regular deep sanitation of equipment and area

• Relieve other Plant Sanitation workers for breaks, vacation, and sickness

• Must be able to work alone or in a group setting for extended periods of time

• Must be able to complete tasks in established time frame

• Must have good attention to detail

• Develops new methods, procedures, and systems to improve quality and food safety performance, and implement corrective actions

• Other duties as assigned

• Read, understand, and create WHIMIS and chemical labels

• Effectively organize and prioritize assigned work for the day around the business needs

• Mechanically inclined, must be able to perform minor repairs to sanitation equipment plant wide.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

• Using or wearing the protective equipment designated by the accident prevention policy

• Follow safe work procedures and or provide new or improved procedures

• Reporting immediately to their supervisor any unsafe conditions or acts

• Reporting all accidents or injuries to your supervisor immediately

Food Safety Responsibilities

• Follow good manufacturing practices and HACCP rules

• Participate in food safety and quality programs of the facility within the specific role

• Reporting of food safety, food security and quality control concerns to the immediate supervisor and action within the role

• Participate in sanitation activities

Qualifications and Abilities

• Ability to identify potential hazards

• Thorough understanding on customer expectations and requirements

• Ability to meet Irving Standards

• Familiar with OHS Act Regulations Code

• Chemical use and safety as per instruction

• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from supervisor or designate

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Process and Applicable Equipment 101

• Understanding of our Emergency Response procedure

• Able and willing to work 8 hours

• Experience with JD Edwards Operating System would be an asset

• Ability to follow Lock Out Tag Out Procedures

• Versed in fall protection

• Previous sanitation experiences an asset

• Fall protection / Confined Space training

• Use of powered pallet jack

• Ability to work at heights for extended periods

• Ability to work with computers (MS Office & SPC)

• Ability to train others

• Drives for exceptional results

• Must have a basic understanding of inventory methods

• Complete necessary paperwork daily, weekly, monthly.

• Clean equipment with the use of the pressure washer, foaming system and floor scrubbers

• Must be able to follow all sanitation standard operating procedures

• Display good work habits and resourcefulness as required by the organization.

• Understand Operating Instructions and Inspection Requirements

• Ensure quality control and efficient workflow

Physical Requirements


• Stand/walk for 8 hours

• Ability to squat, bend, kneel, reach, twist, use ladders, climb stairs

• Occasional lifting up to 50lb/23kg

• Occasional carrying up to 50lb/23kg

• Occasional pushing up to 50lb/23kg

• Frequent pulling up to 50lb/23kg

• Ability to work in cold environment

• Ability to work at heights

• Use of respiratory masks
