Description

SSE Operations within the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Indigenous Cultural Specialist for approximately 12 months.

This position reports to the Operations Manager. The incumbent will work closely and collaboratively with an academic team focused on weaving Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and ways of knowing, being, and doing into engineering curriculum, as well as cultural protocol observances for special cultural events and the respectful inclusion of Traditional Knowledge Keepers in teaching, learning, and cultural event planning. The position will provide cultural advice to faculty, staff, and students on campus looking to engage Elders and Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous engineers, educators, and other community members to support this work. This role will ensure that the faculty, as a whole, upholds ethical space, cultural safety, and the protection of the traditional knowledge keepers and systems in line with Indigenous protocols and ethics for knowledge exchange. Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ensuring the respectful inclusion of traditional knowledge keepers and coordination of cultural protocols and gifting for special events and ceremonial activities.
  • Work with the Teaching Chairs in Weaving Indigenous Knowledge and Perspectives in Engineering to support faculty and the SSE curriculum review.
  • Providing cultural advice and guidance to the Schulich community on cultural protocols.
  • Developing learning resources and facilitate workshops for the Schulich community on cultural protocols and observances (e.g. special cultural observances, protocols and processes for cultural gifting, and teachings related to regional traditional land acknowledgements, honour songs, and the university tipis).
  • Support the development of engineering curricula that weaves, welcomes, and honours Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing.
  • Supports the development of engineering curricula that seeks to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, specifically TRC Call to Action #92, and the APEGA Ethical Guidelines around Reconciliation in Engineering
  • Liaising with the Office of Indigenous Engagement/Indigenous Elders/Traditional Knowledge Keepers for the purpose of inclusion in special events, ceremony, teachings, and presentations.
  • Ensuring university policies procedures and practices are respectful of cultural protocols and promote respectful inclusion of traditional knowledge keepers.
  • Establish a welcome and inclusively, culturally competent understanding within SSE faculty, staff and students that promotes and respects Indigenous ways of knowing, teaching, learning and research.
  • Initiating and leading projects aimed at improving the support for Indigenous Truth and Reconciliation within the SSE.
  • Identifies professional development needs and skills priorities for the faculty and staff.
  • Promoting a collaborative team environment through excellent role modeling and sharing of knowledge to increase Indigenous ways of knowing and doing.
  • Working in close collaboration with the leadership team within SSE, the Office of Indigenous Engagement, and Writing Symbols lodge to ensure implementation of University of Calgary policies and procedures relating to Indigenous engagement and inclusion.
  • Working within the SSE Indigenous Strategy Committee to share knowledge and create programs that enhance Indigenous Cultural teachings.

Qualifiations / Requirements:

  • Familiarity and knowledge of local and/or regional Indigenous cultural protocols, ceremony and Indigenous observances is essential.
  • Completed bachelor's degree in related field or qualified relevant experience.
  • First Nations, Metis, or Inuit community experience, including work-related endeavours; experience working in Southern Alberta within Treaty 7 First Nations, and Metis District 5 and 6 is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years related work experience, preferably with Indigenous programs, and/or communities.
  • Existing positive, trusted relationships with Indigenous communities, leaders, and cultural knowledge keepers; relationships within Treaty 7 First Nations, and Metis District 5 and 6 is preferred.
  • Experience in the guiding, facilitating and/or coordinating Indigenous cultural events and supporting Indigenous ceremonies.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills, contributing to a positive team environment.
  • This position requires excellent time management and relationship building skills through the ability to be present and available.
  • Demonstrated excellence in facilitation skills (public speaking).
  • Ability to act decisively and to exercise a high degree of diplomacy, confidentiality, initiative, and judgment.
  • Good judgment, relationship building, interpersonal communication, and diplomacy in working with team members, internal members of the campus community, and external partner organization.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to perform multiple and complex tasks, with attention to detail and business processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to lead, develop, and guide others in a competent and professional manner.
