We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services. As a Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the laboratory team in the collection, preparation, and analysis of specimens.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collect blood and other specimens and label them with relevant information according to Fraser Health policies.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis by centrifuging, aliquoting, and distributing them by priority.
  • Perform clerical duties, including computer data entry for patient information and tests.
  • Clean, operate, and maintain equipment, such as temperature checks on fridges, incubators, autoclaves, and water baths.
  • Prepare reagents, media, and specimen collection material, and distribute them as required.
  • Load specimens for analysis on barcode-enhanced automated and semi-automated equipment.
  • Perform laboratory tests, such as urine dipsticks and glucose tests using urinalysis machines and glucose meters.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area according to established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with clerical functions, such as counting inventory and notifying staff of inventory levels.
  • Provide assistance as required, including performing ECG testing.
Requirements:
  • Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, plus one year's recent, related experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Ability to keyboard at 25 w.p.m.
