Job Summary

The Research Coordinator/technician is responsible for supporting research initiatives at the Division of Infectious Diseases at VGH and the Steiner laboratory at BCCHR. Ongoing research projects include C. difficile, Staph aureus, and food and antibiotic allergy studies, and new initiatives are being explored. Specifically, the Research Coordinator will perform research project administration, start-up, recruitment, data collection, and close out for clinical trials, and will assist laboratory staff in assays related to clinical research projects and other ongoing projects.

Note: this position is expected to be filled by an internal candidate

Organizational Status
This is a full-time position which requires work on site at Vancouver General Hospital and BCCHR, depending on specific needs of the research team. The successful candidate will report to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Ted Steiner).

Work Performed

- Ensures adherence to appropriate procedures and practices for the conduct of research studies by following good clinical practice (GCP) standards.- Prepares cell culture, media, and recombinant protein production- Assist in rodent experimentation - Utilizing basic laboratory techniques and protocols to perform flow cytometry - Assist with the preparation of documents for submission to research ethics board and applications for operational approvals from health authority research institutes and facilities, including submission of annual renewals, amendments, etc.- Prepares study documentation including informed consent forms, data collection forms and case report forms on various data collection platforms.- Coordinates study participant eligibility screening, enrollment and follow-up; ensuring compliance with study protocols.- Assist with the coordination of blood, urine and stool collections.- Enters clinical and laboratory data into databases.- Ensures that case report forms are completed, and administers data into electronic databases.​- Works with research teams from other study sites on multicenter research projects.- Maintains patient confidentiality.- Meets deadlines for academic and industry sponsors.- Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Coordinator must perform duties according to GCP guidelines and be independently motivated, organized, and detail orientated. The Research Coordinator is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner, suited to the proper activities of the University of British Columbia and those governing the activities of the institution. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to. Breaches in confidentiality, inattention to detail, and data entry errors could have significant effect on the integrity of the research, which could impact funding and the reputation of the Investigator. Consequences of errors are high as this position has significant responsibility and the successful applicant will work independently with minimal instructions and supervision.

Supervision Received
The incumbent will work independently under the directions of the Principal Investigator (Dr. Ted Steiner). Additional supervision will be provided by the Lab Manager at the Steiner lab and the Division Administrator and Research Manager in the UBC Division of Infectious Diseases.

Supervision Given
May provide guidance to volunteers and co-op students on routine tasks.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.

Experience: Previous clinical research experience and basic laboratory experience are required. Experience working in a health setting or with health information technology is an asset. Computer literacy and experience required. Knowledge of UBC Research Ethics Board (REB), Tri-Council Policy (TCPS2) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Guidelines is required.

- Effective interpersonal and problem-solving skills.- Ability to perform technical writing and editing duties.- Ability to effectively use MS Word, Excel, Outlook; experience with REDCap, FlowJo, and Graph Pad Prism an asset.- Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.- Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.- Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
