Job Summary

Under the direction of a Program Manager and working within an interdisciplinary mental health and addiction team, the Community Mental Health Nurse will provide a range of clinical services to a population of acute and persistent mental health disordered children, youth and their families. The Community Mental Health Nurse will use clinical knowledge and interpersonal skills in all aspects of professional practice pertinent to the Psychiatric Nursing Discipline. The incumbent will provide clinical nursing skills in the development and maintenance of community mental health treatment programs, and adhere to nursing practice standards.

Education

Graduation from a recognized school of psychiatric nursing or graduation from a school of general nursing supplemented by postgraduate training in psychiatric nursing. Registered/eligible with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS). Registered/eligible with the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association of SK.

Experience

Requires a minimum of two years (postgraduate) recent recognized experience in a community mental health setting working with children, youth and families presenting with acute and chronic mental health problems.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of normal child and adolescent development and psychopathology. Knowledge and skill related to community psychiatric nursing practice including, but not limited to, assessment, triage, treatment, case management and medication usage and side effects. Ability to implement a variety of evidence based intervention strategies (individual or group) for individuals with mental health and addiction problems in a community based setting. Knowledge of community psychiatric nursing clinical standards of practice and the ability to develop and ensure compliance of those standards related to a community mental health setting. Knowledge of the diversity of cultures, values and traditions and their impact on accessing mental health services. Organizational skills, including the ability to maintain priorities while managing multiple and diverse demands. Leadership abilities and the ability to work within a change management model. Interpersonal competence, including effective problem solving and conflict resolutions skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team to manage complex and multiple demands. Ability to identify, implement and evaluate areas of client difficulty across a wide range of clinical presentation and formulate evidence based intervention. Ability to work in partnership within the community and possess a broad knowledge of community resources including treatment programs and support agencies. Ability to design, initiate and conduct in service training for other professionals. Ability to provide public education regarding children and youth and mental health concerns. Knowledge and practical application of the Mental Health Services Act and Health Information Protection Act and other legislation that impacts the work of clinicians in a mental health setting. Strong communication skills (written and verbal). Ability to document in a concise and timely manner. Ability to enter and retrieve data in computer database systems.
