Primary Purpose

The Career Development Specialist (CDS) provides career learning facilitation, career advising, coaching and consultation to students, graduates, and alumni through one-on-one sessions, and group learning in workshops and career events. The CDS consults with students, faculty members, and chairs on career development learning-related topics at the academic department level. The CDS develops work-integrated learning opportunities by connecting with employers and building connections with internal and external partners. The CDS also creates resources and learning materials and is involved with projects that lead to the improvement of career advising best practices.


Specific Responsibilities

  • Advises, consults, and coaches students, graduates and alumni on employment or career management-related topics and skills, including career exploration and planning, resume writing, self-branding, job search strategies, interview techniques and networking approaches.
  • Consults on career development learning with students, faculty members and the chairs with a focus on students’ career readiness and enhancing their employability.
  • Collaborates with UCW community members, including faculty, staff and students, on new initiatives, career development programming and services.
  • Develops and delivers relevant career workshops using BOPPPs, events, resources, services, and educational materials to support students and alumni in their career and professional development.
  • Proactively identifies, establishes, and maintains external relationships with local employers, professional associations, and industries to optimize potential career or work-integrated learning opportunities for students and alumni.
  • Involve in developing, planning, and organizing campus-wide events such as job fairs, industry connection and events, Employer Talk Series, Career Week, etc. to promote students’ agency, awareness and engagement of their career development actions, and to help build connections with industries, employers, the business community, and associations.
  • Actively participate and support student events including new student orientation and other events.
  • Collects and maintains accurate data within the various information systems related to career development services, such as the co-curricular record, volunteer database, customer relations management, and student information systems.
  • Analyze and synthesize collected data to understand students’ feedback and use this to improve career development services.
  • Follows best practices with relevant research and trends in career development, job market and employment, and work-integrated learning.
  • Participates in establishing goals and objectives for the department that support student career development and success.
  • Supports the daily operations of the Career Development Centre.
  • Manages and monitors the services and resources provided to students and graduates to ensure quality, effective and efficient services.
  • Generates program interest with professional associations, industries, and local employers.
  • Participates in outreach and marketing activities to various student groups and units on campus.
  • Assist with other duties as required.


Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Business Administration, Counselling/ Psychology, or related field. Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Certified Career Development Professional (CDP) from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in career advising or employment services.
  • Demonstrated experience in an educational environment advising students on their career development needs, facilitating students’ learning, or experience in a business setting performing employment training, or relevant responsibilities.
  • Strong ability to use technology. Familiarity with Microsoft Office 365, Articulate 360 and Bright Space is an asset.
  • Must be professional in all aspects of the position including a positive attitude and growth mindset.
  • Student-centered philosophy and practice: creative, solution-oriented and open to learning.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, superior listening skills with a focus on details.
  • Organized, agile, capable, and with a track record in managing competing priorities or high workloads while delivering results on time.
  • Passionate, innovative, and committed to supporting students’ growth and career success.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain partner relationships with key stakeholders and partners.
  • Familiar with post-secondary work environment, and instructional design experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
