Position Summary:

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Review and Evaluation of Development Applications:

  • Attend meetings with the applicants and provide guidance and/or alternative design solutions in support of urban design policy objectives

Policy Analysis & Research:

  • Undertake research on applicable urban design topics, provide urban design input into various planning policies and design guidelines including urban design initiatives related to the public realm and City's Public Art Policy;
  • Undertakes built form modelling as input to the Official Plan, Secondary Plans, other planning studies, including proposed development; prepare written reports, guidelines, policies, and implementing strategies supplemented by drawings.

Local Planning Appeals Tribunal:

  • Represent the City as an urban design expert witness at Ontario Land Tribunal hearings
  • Generate, assist and provide input into issues list and concerns, witness statements including furnishing alternative design concepts and supporting illustrations and diagrams

Customer Service:

  • Perform other duties as assigned which are directly related to the major responsibilities of the job, such as liaising with other departments, public agencies, the public and other stakeholders
  • Provide advice and recommendations to management staff and consultants, and attend meetings of Council as well as Committees of Council when necessary
  • Respond to enquiries and provide clarification regarding submission requirements
  • Provide information and clarification regarding the City's urban design guidelines

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in Urban Design, Planning (with Urban Design focus), Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or related discipline
  • Membership in OPPI, and other professional organization in the urban design related field is preferred
  • Minimum of 4 years of design experience

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, SketchUp, AutoCad, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
  • Knowledge of the planning process and related legislation
  • Knowledge of the Town's Official Plan, Zoning By-Law, and urban design guidelines, including heritage conservation approaches and principles
  • Project management and leadership skills
  • Critical thinking, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Experience working with public and private agencies
  • Advanced analytical thinking skills
  • Research and Report Writing skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrates good judgment and makes sound decisions
