OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Support Work Program Manager, the Support Worker fosters a safe and supportive environment, with a focus on daily living skills, emotional and psychological needs.

The Support Worker plays a crucial role in supporting families on their journey toward resilience and healing.


The In-Home Family Support Worker at Shawenim Abinoojii is committed to empowering families by providing compassionate and culturally relevant support within their homes.

Through collaboration with community resources, conducting assessments, and developing personalized support plans, the Support Worker promotes the holistic well-being of individuals and families.

By implementing strategies to enhance family dynamics and advocating for their rights, this role ensures access to resources and services that align with First Nations identity and values.


KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Supports youth in the development of their daily living skills, based on their needs and goals.
  • Collaborate with community resources focused on wellness services and support, which may include cultural teachings, mental health and addictions supports, and other services.
  • Conducting assessments to identify the specific needs and goals of individuals and families and developing personalized support plans accordingly.
  • Implementing strategies and interventions to promote positive family dynamics and enhance communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Monitoring progress and outcomes of support plans, adjusting strategies as necessary to ensure continued effectiveness.
  • Providing inhome support services, including assistance with daily living activities, household management, and transportation.
  • Advocating for the rights and wellbeing of individuals and families, ensuring they have access to resources and services that meet their needs.
  • Liaise with the SAI Wellness Unit to facilitate access to services and programming based on the First Nations identity of our people.
  • Fostering a safe and supportive environment that empowers families to explore and respond to their emotional and psychological needs.
  • Complete and submit required service documentation, including daily logs and incident reports.
  • Utilize a relationshipbased approach to deescalating and responding to emergencies as they arise.
  • Maintain timely and effective communication with the holistic circle of care to support the care of youth.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of two years related experience in the helping field.
  • Strong understanding of approaches to supporting life skills development.
  • Knowledge of communitybased resources.
  • Knowledge in the areas of Addictions, Attachment, Mental Health & Trauma and how it impacts young people.
  • Knowledge of the Child and Family Services (CFS) sector & foster care legislation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of First Nations experiences, culture and philosophies.
  • Demonstrated skills and competence to establish supportive relationships.
  • Knowledge of assessment and crisis intervention.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule in order to accommodate the needs of the youth.
  • Satisfactory Child Abuse, Adult Abuse, Vulnerable Person Check and Criminal Record Check.
  • Excellent communication, organization, problem solving, and team skills.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe preferred.
