  • Job SummaryReporting directly to the Director Administration, the Financial Clerk plays a key role in the development and maintenance finance, accounting, and administration records. Responsibilities include the sessional tracking, financial commitments tracking, assistance with quarterly and yearend financial activities, such as preparation of accounting entries, reconciliation of accounts, review of accounts for accuracy and completeness, comparing budgeted revenue and expenses to actual and reporting significant discrepancies.
This position works closely with and provides support to the academic units and service units.

This position contributes to the development of strong financial and operational procedures that align with departmental and university policies and accepted accounting practices.

This position may train other employees in the implementation of these procedures.

Additional responsibilities include answering departmental inquiries in person and on the phone, maintaining effective relationships with key central service areas (e.g.; Financial Services, Purchasing, and Payroll) and providing back-up to the Dean's office staff, as required.

This work takes place in an environment of changing priorities and tight time deadlines. The Finance Clerk must be flexible and adaptable to changing needs and requirements as they emerge.

  • Job RequirementsThis position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to 3 years' experience working within a comparable environment preferably in a higher education or institutional environment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience performing reconciliations, including general ledger account reconciliations.

  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures and comply with UVic accounting and purchasing policies.
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills.
  • Experience in maintaining confidential and sensitive information.
  • UVic general accounting and finance experience is considered an asset.

Specialized Knowledge/Education:


Grade 12 completion plus Accounting Technician Certificate or Diploma or at least first year standing in a recognized accounting program (CPA) is considered an asset.
