ABOUT WANASAH


Wanasah is a new mental health agency created to address the urgent mental health and addictions needs of Black youth and their families through the provision of effective Black-centric mental health services in the community.

Wanasah recognizes the need for inclusive, trauma-informed care with meaningful incorporation of spirituality and community voice in its programming. We work within an anti-racist, anti-Black racist and anti-oppression framework that incorporates principles of intersectionality. Wanasah is based in Regent Park, Toronto.

The successful individual will work with a small, dedicated team to develop, evaluate, and adapt an innovative model of care.


Position Summary


Wanasah is seeking a Community Support Worker to work with Black youth aged 12-25 with mental health, substance use, and addictions concerns and their families in Regent Park and neighbouring areas.

These youth may be experiencing serious diagnosed/undiagnosed mental illness, problematic substance use, involvement with the criminal justice system and/or a mental health crisis.

The Community Support Worker's primary role is to provide comprehensive cultural understanding and access to the community/clients.

A key focus will be on building trust and engagement with clients and their families, particularly for those experiencing substance use and addictions concerns.

The Community Support Worker will act as a liaison for the team through community outreach and engagement with potential clients, families, and agencies.


The position will report directly to the Program Manager and work closely with other members of the Wanasah team, namely the Case Manager, Mental Health Counsellors, Community Support Worker, and Spiritual Care Facilitator, as well as partner agencies in the community.

The Community Support Worker will utilize a Black-centric,person and family centered, culturally and spiritually affirming, healing-centred approach.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Support the clinical team in identifying and engaging with clients and their families particularly those who have concerns related to substance use and addictions.
  • Collaborate with community members and community agencies to identify clients and families that would benefit from services.
  • Act as a liaison between community members requiring services and Wanasah clinical staff.
  • Identify and support with problemsolving barriers to access care, and challenges in adhering to care.
  • Focus on outreach and engagement to encourage low barrier access to services
  • Work closely with the clinical team to ensure that intervention strategies incorporate cultural, ethnic, spiritual, particularly related to mental health, substance use, and addictions.
  • Develop, implement, and deliver outreach activities and presentations as needed
  • Colead workshops with the clinical team.
  • Attend intake reviews and case conferences as required.
  • Support clients in adhering to care plans particularly related to mental health, substance use and addictions.
  • Implementation of models of best practice and evidencebased practice relevant to the role.
  • Maintain accurate and uptodate communication regarding client/family interactions and outreach and engagement activities.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with family/chosen family, community agencies/partners and other resources in the community.
  • Participate in ongoing trainings for qualityofcare to initiate positive changes in programs and services.
  • Meet with Clinical lead as a part of training and development.
  • Participate as a full member of Wanasah's team.
  • Comply with Wanasah's policies and procedures including those relating to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • The successful applicant will reflect the Regent Park and neighbouring communities and have "lived experience" of substance use and addictions.
  • Strong understanding of Regent Park and neighbouring communities' dynamic and culture particularly in terms of the diversity of the Black community.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting individuals with mental health, substance use and addictions issues, from a recovery, harm reduction, and clientcentered approach
  • Knowledge of issues impacting youth with mental health, substance use and addictions concerns, and familiarity with local resources and supports.
  • Understanding of spirituality and faith in providing meaningful mental health and addictions services.
  • Selfdirected and independent, but also proven experience working effectively as a team member, including in collaboration with other community partners.
