$15.50/hour


Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre is an accredited, non-profit organization providing support services to residents of Mississauga including newcomers to Canada, youth, seniors, and families.

JOB SUMMARY:


In addition to assisting the planning and facilitation of highly engaging activities for children 6 to 12 years of age, the Mental Health Day Camp Counsellor is also responsible for overseeing all aspects of mental health and assisting with behavioral management of camp participants.

The focus being on emotional and behavioral needs that emerge during our camp. The Mental Health Day Camp Counsellor will _
NOT_ be a therapy provider. Instead, they offer general emotional support and crisis management as needed.

In addition, they work with our Day Camp Counsellors and Leaders to ensure the safety, supervision, and facilitation of camp participants.

All camp staff are required to attend the mandatory staff training for the two weeks prior to camp beginning.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Respond appropriately when addressing challenging participant behaviours as they arise, implementing the necessary behaviour management strategies.
  • Assist the planning and implementation, and facilitation of creative, ageappropriate activities that engage participants in a balance of physical, social, emotional, inclusive, and integrative ways.
  • Engage in physical activity with children in the program rooms, gymnasium, and outdoor spaces while maintaining awareness and safety.
  • Provide regular, ongoing, welltimes coaching, mentorship, guidance, and feedback for children; mindfully setting expectations and standards.
  • Assist Camp Counsellors and Leaders, in problem solving cases where participants and colleagues need special support.
  • Serve as a resource to participants facing mental, emotional, and social health challenges.
  • Model emotional maturity, respect, empathy,humility, and sensitivity when interacting with children and families who require assistance, mindful support, or are from culturally diverse populations.
  • Provide opportunities for children to be challenged physically, cognitively, and emotionally in a safe, positive, supporting environment.
  • Create opportunities for children to identify and articulate their needs and interests.
  • Evoke participation in a group environment; effectively engaging participants that arrive with barriers.
  • Take advantage of spontaneous learning and development opportunities in everyday situations, using positive interaction and proactive intervention.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ASSETS:

  • Postsecondary education with, or actively pursuing a Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Psychology, Counselling, Child Youth Care, Social Service Worker, a related Mental Health/Wellness program, or related experience in a relevant field.
  • Experience working directly in mental health and wellness through paid work or volunteerism considered an asset.
  • Experience working directly with children from various cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, and developmental backgrounds through paid work or volunteerism considered an asset.
  • Proactively manage escalating situations with critical thinking, deescalate and manage conflict effectively, and solve problems creatively.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of antibias philosophy, fostering community belonging and inclusivity with an EDI approach.
  • Demonstrates capacity for engagement and relationship building with both children and their caregivers.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the youth experience, the assets children possess, the difficulties children may face, and of issues for child mental health and wellness.
  • Knowledge of developmental needs of school age children.
  • Experience working with underserved children and families from an equitable, antioppressive framework an asset.
  • Strong communication skills with children, caregivers, and colleagues.
  • Proficiency in English and an addition language considered a strong asset, demonstrating effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Able to effectively collaborate in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team environment.
  • Standard First Aid, CPR-C, AED, HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Childhood Development and ASIST considered assets.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada; Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident status required.
