The Newcomer Women's Services Toronto (NEW) is an award winning not-for-profit charity organization that was founded by a group of Latin American refugees in 1983 with a vision of strong women building strong communities.

A multi-service agency with operations in two Toronto locations serving 800+ Immigrants and Refugees annually.

The agency was awarded a Non-profit Employer of Choice Award in 2020 The Canadian Non-profit Employer of Choice Awards (NEOC) recognizes organizations across Canada that have committed themselves to better business management practices to achieve their mission.

With almost 40 years of operations, NEW has been providing settlement, employment, youth programs and services, as well as English language training for newcomers and immigrants.

NEW also delivers special programs focused on immigrant women empowerment, leadership and skills development, and mentorship and career advancement for immigrant and refugee women.


About the Role


Community connections program will focus on building bridges between newcomers and host communities, creating meaningful relationships and understanding among newcomers and Canadians, including Indigenous peoples, with the aim of creating a welcoming environment, enhancing a sense of belonging, social cohesion, employment readiness, and informal language learning.

Program activities will focus on promoting social integration and well-being, social cohesion, and active citizenship among newcomers to Canada.


The Program Facilitator will deliver a variety of workshops and information sessions focused on the social, cultural and civic integration, engagement and advancement for newcomers to Canada.

The Facilitator will develop curriculum, tools and resources that support newcomers to develop the skills, knowledge, confidence and connections they need to play a strong, active role in civic life.


The Facilitator will be responsible for the delivery of 45 workshops and information sessions and reaching out and serving approximately 450 newcomers via the activities that will be delivered under Building Community Connections program.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design and development of civic engagement program curriculum and workshops
  • Facilitate Newcomer-CanadianIndigenous Peoples dialogue to build understanding of rights and responsibilities of being Canadian, including stewardship of the land, participation in defining and building an inclusive society, volunteerism and civic engagement
  • Develop online and printed tools and resources on indigenous communities, civic life in Canada, volunteering and mentorship opportunities for newcomers
  • Create a peer to peer support model for newcomers to Canada and a mentorship matching system to match newcomers with established members of the community with common interests and characteristics, to create a more welcoming local community environment for newcomers
  • Deliver cultural programs in partnerships with Museums, Music schools, Arts organizations and historical sites to raise newcomers awareness about Canada
  • Organize and plan a number of events and activities with the goal of building newcomers social connections and capital
  • Support Program Manager in reporting and evaluation activities, including through the production of monthly statistical and narrative reports
  • Support reporting activities to funder (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada), including working with partners around completion of evaluation reports
  • Develop and maintain positive working relations with partner organizations and other organizations to collaborate on the delivery of our program activities. These partners include public libraries, school boards, community centres and either newcomerserving agencies
  • Facilitate information sharing with newcomer communities to enable newcomers' participation in civic life, including through sharing volunteer opportunities, accessing and sharing community resources, forums, and other events throughout Toronto
  • Input data into appropriate forms, reports, and databases and produces monthly reports
  • Attend workshops and training designed for staff development and growth
