The Economic Development Specialist (Planner II) delivers programs and services that advance Business Friendly Edmonton and supports local businesses to grow and invest in Edmonton.

Specifically, this position will lead the delivery of regulatory information and pathfinding services to business owners as they navigate through the City of Edmonton's permit and licence processes, as well as identification and referrals to other business support services.


Guided by the Economic Action Plan, the Economic Development Specialist will lead public education programs and service delivery improvements, using an equity lens, to support a vibrant and prosperous business community and further our City's reputation as business friendly.

  • Lead the delivery of the regulatory support & pathfinding services to support business launch and growth and to foster local economic development. Includes planning for marketing and promotion of the services
  • Identify and contribute to opportunities to accelerate internal processes (e.g. business regulations, red tape reduction)
  • Manage all phases (concept, planning, implementation, performance measures, close) of Business Friendly Edmonton projects/programs. This requires a planning lens to provide decisions that advance business from a land use and planning policy perspective
  • Develop and enhance internal and external partnerships, professional services agreements, memorandum of understanding, etc. to foster program uptake, delivery and reach
  • Maintain collaborative partnerships and effective communication with key stakeholders including City Council (as directed), local and recentlylanded businesses, internal partners and agencies, and other levels of government to deliver shared objectives
  • Prepare and conduct presentations to internal and external audiences, including developing customized content to meet the objectives of partner organizations
  • Lead and coordinate planning and commercial policy development process including scope, principle aims, stakeholder engagement, timing and resourcing
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • University degree in Business Administration, Urban and/or Regional Planning, Economic Development, Arts, or a related field
  • Minimum of 4 years' experience
  • Current knowledge of the planning and development permit processes, the Municipal Government Act, Zoning Bylaws and Alberta Safety Code and other relevant statutory plans, policies, procedures, and bylaws is an asset
  • Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), Alberta Professional Planning Institute (APPI), or Alberta Development will be considered an asset
  • Officers Association membership is an asset
  • Public engagement/participation certificate an asset
  • Detailed knowledge of policy development and practices and their potential impact on local businesses
  • Knowledge of Edmonton and Alberta's economic, cultural and political environment
  • Demonstrated ability to respond flexibly to demands and expedite tasks and assignments
  • Proven ambitious and resourceful research skills that demonstrate the ability to screen information and distil vital and relevant data to formulate strategy, policy and actions
  • Proven ability to excel in the context of a highly performing team with ambitious timelines
