The Division of Shelter Operations oversees the day-to-day operations of the agency's shelter systems for Single Adults, Adult Families, and Families with Children, whether directly run or through contracted providers. The main focus of this division is on re-housing shelter populations and implementing shelter initiatives. It is responsible for ensuring sites run within budgets, maintain health and safety standards, and comply with all legal regulations.
This division ensures services are available 24/7/365 across all five boroughs to the city's most vulnerable population.

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is seeking to fill the role of Assistant Commissioner for Shelter Operations who will:

  • Direct and manage the Single Adults, Adult Families, and Families with Children divisions operating 24/7.
  • Supervise daily shelter activities and collaborate with providers to develop referral sources for prevention services.
  • Implement specialized case management strategies to assist homeless individuals and families in transitioning to permanent housing.
  • Oversee effective provision of client services in shelters for Single Adults, Adult Families, and Families with Children.
  • Manage external relations with service providers, governmental agencies, and community organizations.
  • Advise senior Agency staff on matters related to shelter operations.
  • Administer shelter and social services for different shelter types throughout the city, ensuring compliance with court orders.
  • Handle shelter contracting processes, including budgeting and legal aspects.
  • Implement cutting-edge best practices in homeless services delivery.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A baccalaureate degree and four years of experience in social services, with a year of administrative or managerial experience.
Preferred Skills:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous conflict resolution experience.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Previous experience working with the homeless.
