The Ministry of Municipal Affairs assists municipalities in providing well-managed, collaborative, and accountable local government to Albertans

Role:


Municipal Affairs' Executive Correspondence Unit (ECU) provides vital support to the Minister, Deputy Minister, and across the department when communicating the Government of Alberta's strategies, policies, and programs related to municipalities to Albertans, elected officials, and stakeholder organizations.

In this role, you will directly lead the performance of the Writing and Editing Team to ensure the highest quality of writing and content editing, consistent messaging, and responsive correspondence.


Reporting to the Manager, Executive Correspondence Unit, you will coordinate multiple and simultaneous writing campaigns, prioritize and respond to high volumes of correspondence—often with tight turnarounds and competing deadlines, and develop and maintain metrics to advance our team's continuous improvement.

You will ensure the Minister, Deputy Minister, and Executive Team offices receive effective and efficient correspondence and issues support.

Your excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, time management, political acumen will be a welcome addition to our highly responsive, multi-tasking, and fast-paced environment.


As the Team Lead, your positive leadership attributes will allow you to bring the skills to supervise, support, and provide the expertise to lead a team of writers to ensure they are meeting the Minister's and Deputy Minister's preferences for formatting, style, and content.


Specific duties include:

  • Leading a writing and editing team within ECU operations to advance operational quality standards, business plans, and performance goals.
  • Liaising with the Minister's and Deputy Minister's offices on daily priorities and highly sensitive issues, triaging incoming AR responses, and reviewing and signing off on executive level correspondence.
  • Synthesizing and interpreting trends to inform operational decisions, strategic planning, and developing and maintaining processes and metrics to track and measure performance, and fostering and implementing change in team operations as needed.
  • Reviewing draft ARs, conducting independent research to analyze and verify information, identifying and addressing issues prior to final review, and drafting briefings, letters, and memos for ongoing initiatives or issues.
  • Compiling data and statistics to inform broader ECU planning and reporting of the ECU, summarizing team results, and ensuring the delivery of ongoing team development.

Qualifications:


A related university degree such as English or Communications plus a minimum 4 years progressively responsible related experience in drafting and editing executive level correspondence is required.
