Outreach and Project Coordinator

Toronto, Ontario, Canada Karma Food Co Full time $64,500
TEA is seeking a full-time Community Projects Manager to lead our community-focused environmental projects.

For over 35 years, the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) has campaigned locally to find solutions to Toronto's urban environmental problems.

TEA is recognized Canada-wide for our municipal work on climate change, waste reduction, and other issues we believe are critical to the health and well-being of Toronto residents.

TEA is looking for a Community Projects Manager to lead community-focused environmental projects with deep engagement elements.

The successful applicant will connect with residents across the city to engage new and diverse voices on issues like climate change and waste reduction, and seed new resident-led ideas for long-term environmental solutions.

The Community Projects Manager will support multiple TEA projects that actively engage communities across Toronto through workshops, events, and community outreach with partner organizations.

This means engaging residents in accessible and creative ways in their communities, with a focus on connecting environmental issues with local priorities.

This work aims to build meaningful and long-term relationships with equity-owed communities that have not been historically included by the mainstream environmental movement, including people living in suburban and dense urban neighbourhoods.

The Manager will work closely with our Campaigns team to build strong, grassroots foundations for future policy change, and to bring community voices into democratic processes at City Hall.

The Community Projects Manager is responsible for collaboratively planning and delivering community projects and the community-focused elements of TEA's campaigns to build a greener and more equitable city, including:
Designing workshops and events to gather feedback from community members on urban environmental challenges, intersecting issues, and solutions
Developing engagement and outreach strategies to deepen and enhance TEA's work across the city, and bring new voices into environmental advocacy
Fostering and maintaining relationships with key community organizations across different geographic and cultural communities, including resident-led environmental groups (eg high-rise "green teams," neighbourhood climate action groups, etc)
Tracking and meeting project grant deliverables and timelines
Developing strategies to bring TEA's community relationships into campaigns to build a greener, more equitable city
Working with the communications team to develop and implement campaign and project communications strategies that creatively communicate environmental issues and reach people both online and offline
Recruiting, training, and organizing volunteers as needed
Working with the campaigns team to lead targeted community outreach and community mobilizing (e.g. events, workshops, door-knocking) on specific campaign issues
Strong commitment to environmental justice and anti-oppression
Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience including some community-focused work
Recent experience designing and facilitating community conversations, events or workshops on environmental and/or social justice issues
Experience working with diverse communities of people from across Toronto
Strong understanding of tools and techniques to create a supportive and welcoming space for people who have limited environmental or policy knowledge
Knowledge of the principles of climate justice and the need to move away from "traditional" environmental messaging, particularly in equity-owed communities
Knowledge of how grassroots political change happens - some advocacy or community organizing experience is preferred
Knowledge of urban environmental issues, intersecting issues, and opportunities
Some knowledge of social media and communications tools used by community organizers would be an asset
Experience with writing funding proposals and managing grants would be an asset
Ability to speak multiple languages would be an asset
This is a full-time one-year position with the possibility of renewal. The Community Projects Manager may occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends.

TEA has a hybrid workplace, with staff presently working both remotely and at least 1 day per week in our office in downtown Toronto.

The successful candidate will need to reside within the GTA, and organize and attend public and community events in person, as requested.
