Job Summary


The Business Analyst analyzes business needs and develops overall strategies for how automated systems can be used to support the short and long term direction of the business.


The Business Analyst assists with the formation and execution of a reporting governance framework, as well as enterprise data and reporting projects.

This role provides expertise and assists with the development and promotion of reporting governance policies to ensure good quality data through all business reports and dashboards.

Organizational Status


This position works closely with report stakeholders, the Data Governance team, hitecture team, to document standards and coordinate the resolution of data integrity gaps while supporting the implementation of systematic and procedural controls.


There will be extensive consultation and interactions with technical project team members; UBC IT Team members; the extended IT at UBC community; data stakeholders from across the UBC academic and administrative community.

Work Performed

Specific Duties:

  • Work with faculties, departments, Enterprise Data Governance and the Enterprise Architecture team to identify and document critical report elements, including business use, ownership, UDAP data lineage and business rules (calculated fields) for reports & dashboards.
  • Play a key role in the development, documentation, and implementation of reporting policies, procedures and standards to ensure a high level of report integrity and availability.
  • Create and disseminate information and policies to create awareness of UDAP and reporting, including governance and processes.
  • Participate in the development of policies and processes to manage reviews of report quality or UDAP data conflicts.
  • Create dashboards and reports in standard UBC BI tools, such as Tableau and MS PowerBI.
  • Work closely with report owners and data stewards to help them comprehend their role and responsibilities in relation to the implementation of developing reporting governance framework and policies.
  • Maintain positive relationships regarding UDAP matters with relevant crossfunctional business partners, providing input and feedback on changing data elements and policies.
  • Recommend enhancements to UDAP and reporting processes to improve the accuracy of data repositories.
  • Identify and promote opportunities for crossbusiness sharing and reuse of UDAP data components, rationalization of data and integrated data.

Core Duties:

  • Analyzes UDAP business needs utilizing a structured requirements process (gathering, analyzing, documenting, and managing changes).
  • Creates enterprise reports and dashboards, as requested by Faculties and Departments.
  • Develops overall strategies and provides advice on options, risks and costs versus benefits.
  • Conducts feasibility studies and drafts proposals for evaluation by appropriate users and managers.
  • Develops and assists in the presentation of business cases.
  • Leads short and longterm planning sessions to implement integrated business process improvements.
  • Identifies, elicits, and documents business requirements, defines business rules and communicates requirements for the implementation of business solutions.
  • Prepares functional, system and program specifications bridging multiple projects.
  • Reviews test plans and monitors the testing process to ensure that business results are adequately tested with mínimal risk.
  • Procures technical assistance to help in problem resolution.
  • Provides technical leadership, coaching and mentoring to lessexperienced individuals.
  • Maintains appropriate professional designations and uptodate knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
