The Indigenous Services Coordinator has several key responsibilities, all rooted in the enhancement of the Indigenous student experience at Conestoga College.

The incumbent is responsible for developing programming, activities, and initiatives that includes both traditional Indigenous knowledge, as well as modern Indigenous ways of knowing to encompass a wholesome approach to learning, community building, and celebrating Indigenous culture on campus.

In addition, the incumbent fosters connections and works in a collaborative capacity across the College in the areas of Indigenous Initiatives, student recruitment, student services, and teaching and learning.

The Coordinator has lived experience as an Indigenous person with an understanding of how Indigenous culture and traditions inform a student's wellbeing.

The incumbent will work with the Manager, Indigenous Services to build community, inside and outside of the College, to continue moving towards meaningful Truth and Reconciliation.

There are two vacancies for this position. One vacancy will be based at the Waterloo campus located at 108 University Ave. East, Waterloo, ON N2J 2W2.

The second vacancy will be based at the Doon campus located at 299 Doon Valley Drive, Kitchener, ON N2G 4M4.

Both positions will require travel as part of the role.

Responsibilities:

Developing, Implementing, and Promoting Conestoga's Indigenous Services Programming, Activities, and Events

  • Researching innovative and creative methods/opportunities to effectively engage students
  • Developing strong relationships with a range of College departments for collaboration to increase communication, and enhance resources available to students on all campuses and virtually
  • Monitoring the status of activities and programs and maintaining the required timelines and deadlines
  • Working effectively with stakeholders/partners to achieve goals and objectives for programs
  • Facilitating partnerships with elders from a variety of backgrounds and acting as a liaison between students and elders
  • Arranging and facilitating sharing circles, creating a safe space for the students to share emotionally and culturally
  • Planning and implementing a calendar of events that may include cultural teachings, academic connections, and opportunities for socializing and connection

Coordination of Indigenous Services Administrative Activities

  • Performing general office management functions.
  • Managing Indigenous student metrics and associated databases in consultation with Institutional Research and the Registrar's Offices
  • Managing and updating Indigenous Services online content, including but not limited to assisting in developing marketing and promotional materials content
  • Committee participation, as identified by the Manager
  • Liaising with college stakeholders (e.g., Student Affairs, Corporate Communications, IT Services, etc.) to ensure communicated initiatives and events
  • Organizing and administering student selfidentification, bursaries, and other processes to support student access
  • Assisting the manager in researching various funding sources
  • Participating in Indigenous Council meetings
  • Creating orientation packages for Indigenous students
  • Supporting the maintenance of budgets and work plans and those assigned for specific programs and special events

Community Engagement

  • Developing and nurturing relationships with community organizations and leaders to support and enhance programming
  • Ensuring that optimal community supports are available to Indigenous students to assist with achieving their goals, develop positive relationships, and thrive within their community
  • Fostering relationships with other educational institutions
  • Representing the college at Indigenous community events
  • Participating in educational outreach, visiting schools, and providing cultural education
  • Representing Conestoga College at local Indigenous ceremonies, events, conferences, etc.
  • Participating in activities for both professional and personal/cultural development
