Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative leader for the position of Clinical Bioethicist / Manager Spiritual and Religious Care in the Ethics/Spiritual and Religious Care department.

The successful individual will promote ethical behavior and collaborate with HSN leadership to build capacity for integrated, sustainable, and accountable ethical decision-making aligned with HSN's mission, vision, and value and accreditation standards.

They will have the opportunity to lead and direct others in the organizations on matters of clinical and organizational ethics related to resource allocation.

In addition, they will plan, organize and control the day to day operations of the department, while also building the capacity of regional partnering health care organizations through the development of organizational polices, practices and resources.

KEY FUNCTION:


Promote ethical behavior and collaborate with HSN leadership to build capacity for integrated, sustainable, and accountable ethical decision-making aligned with HSN's mission, vision, and value and accreditation standards.

Lead and direct others in the organizations on matters of clinical and organizational ethics related to resource allocation.

Plan, organize and control the day to day operations of the department, while also building the capacity of regional partnering health care organizations through the development of organizational polices, practices and resources.


REPORTING:

Under the general direction of the Regional Vice President CCO, Vice-President, Social Accountability.

DUTIES:

  • Develop Ethics, Spiritual and Religious Care education initiatives and programs to promote awareness, knowledge, and skills for staff, medical and interprofessional learners, and external partners.
  • Supervise, recruit and educate members of the HSN ethics facilitation team.
  • Support the enhancement of HSN's moral climate through assessing the ethical culture and developing organizational ethics resources (e.g. facilitation team, management policies, decisionmaking frameworks, and resource allocation strategies).
  • Provide ethics support to committees within HSN as required (e.g. ethics, organ and tissue donation, critical care, incident command).
  • Provide consultation and guidance with the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) provision team that ensures provincial, professional and legal responsibilities are maintained.
  • Provide consultation and guidance to patients, families, contract providers, staff, or physicians on patientspecific ethics issues, hospital management, and governance issues.
  • Direct the work of the Spiritual and Religious Care team at HSN.
  • Determine and align improvement projects with HSN's Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  • Participate in the accreditation process and work to ensure that the program and HSN achieve, maintain and continually improve upon their accredited status.
  • Teach, coach and lead staff in the development and monitoring of quality indicators and improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in and foster professional development of all staff and provide opportunities for learning within budgeted resources.
  • Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors; investigate report, debrief and take or direct corrective action as required on incidents.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders/organizations/community groups to achieve program objectives, integrate and link services and foster partnerships across the continuum of service delivery.
  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  • Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
