ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:


Our team in the Placement Stabilization Unit works collaboratively with the Provincial Placement Resource Unit, Child and Family Services, Mobile Crisis Team as well as the Winnipeg Police Service to mitigate further break down of a youths (aged 9 to 17) placement.

The goal of the Placement Stabilization Unit is to prevent placement breakdown and provide a safe space for youth to stabilize and allow time to repair their placement prior to reunification with family and, if required, be an alternative residence which will support the youths needs.

Reporting to the Program Supervisor, Youth Care Practitioners are responsible for implementing all aspects of the day-to-day functioning of the unit

The Practitioner will:

  • Interact with young people and their family in a manner designed to help them to return to their placement or family safely.
  • Facilitate daily life routines including wakeup and bedtimes.
  • Develop and implement household routines including meal planning and preparation, working with youth to keep their rooms clean and organized and assisting with maintenance and cleanliness of the building and yard.
  • Develop, manage, facilitate and direct all daily program activities, both cultural and clinical and ensure youth engage with My Bundle activities.
  • Facilitating young people having regular contact, as permitted, with family, case worker and placement staff including providing supervised visitation with family members and caregivers.
  • Working as part of the team, ensure consistency in the youths experiences and intervention plans as based on the placement and reunification goals and participate with the team in making informed culturally responsive decisions regarding therapeutic methods based on observations and interactions with the young people and their knowledge of the young persons culture.

EXPERIENCE

  • Two years experience working with at risk youth and their caregivers.
  • Experience working with mental health and/or addictions an asset.

EDUCATION (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Certificate or diploma in Child and Youth Care preferred
  • Combination of education and relevant experience may be considered

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
  • Strong counselling skills and experience in Relational Care, as well as knowledge of trauma and resilience informed care.
  • Valid Manitoba drivers license and acceptable drivers abstract
  • Ability and willingness to work a varied shift schedule including days, evening, overnights and weekends.
  • Certified in Emergency First Aid and CPR Level C
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, clear Child Abuse Registry Check with acceptable Prior Contact Check outcomes and a clear Adult Abuse Registry check; all completed within three months of interview date.
  • Ability to perform independently, take initiative, and as a member of the team.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations.
  • Ability to function in a demanding and stressful environment.
  • Demonstrated effective conceptual, organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking/problemsolving and decisionmaking skills.
