Job Summary

  • The Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University is a small researchintensive campus located in Truro, NS. Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture, environment and related life and social science disciplines, the Faculty of Agriculture educates future leaders and generates knowledge and innovative solutions for healthy, sustainable societies. Reporting to the Program Manager, Extended Learning, the Horticulture Coordinator will coordinate and deliver an online and incommunity horticulture program as part of the "Bridge into Agriculture" project, a 22week horticulture offered online to African Nova Scotians across the province through a collaboration between the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, the Office of African Nova Scotian Affairs, and Extended Learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver online and inperson instruction to community members using a predeveloped curriculum to support the development of horticultural skills knowledge. Ensure training is delivered in a safe manner and in adherence with University processes and policies.
  • Provide virtual and inperson student support and guidance including virtual checkin for questionandanswer sessions once per week and weekly virtual office hours (two hours per week including an evening and a morning).
  • Evaluate student progress using online and in person assessment tools and provide feedback.
  • Collaborate with NSFA, NSDA and ANSA to grow community relationships, engage guest speakers, and organize farm tours and other resources needed for the success of the participants. Accompany students on farm tours.
  • Identify and coordinate site visits across Nova Scotia to provide handson instruction and skills training to grow and maintain a backyard vegetable garden. Foster student relationships within communities and with the agricultural industry.
  • Write project reports as requested as well as a final report. Identify culturally appropriate materials to use in future course offerings.

Note
Travel is a required component of this job with expected community visits within Nova Scotia.

The successful applicant may work in-person on campus, primarily remotely, or perform a hybrid of the two as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a Diploma in Plant Science, Environmental Horticulture or related discipline plus approximately two years' related experience (or equivalent training and experience).
  • Experience in greenhouses including seeding and transplanting; edible horticulture crop production and maintenance; and vegetable and fruit production (planning, garden preparation, planting, and maintenance).
  • Experience in adult education.
  • Proven ability to work respectfully with a diverse population.
  • Proven experience practicing safe gardening methods and safely operating agricultural equipment (e.g. rototiller).
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) with a demonstrated aptitude for learning new software and experience delivering training online.
  • Proven collaboration, interpersonal, and communication (presentation, verbal and written) skills.
  • Demonstrated time management, attentiveness, and the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather and exposed to elements in the environment (e.g. insects); carry loads of up to 50 lbs.; and complete physical activity associated with gardening for extended periods (35 hrs.
