Interim Vice-Principal, South Island Distance Education School (SIDES)

Located on the beautiful Saanich Peninsula near Victoria, the Saanich School District serves approximately 7,100 students in eight elementary, three middle and three secondary schools, as well as two Individual Learning Centres (ILC), the South Island Distance Education School (SIDES) and the Children's Development Centre (CDC). The District employs 650 teachers, 36 principals and vice-principals, 500 unionized support staff, 16 exempt management staff and manages a $71 million operating budget.

The South Island Distance Education School's two campuses (Royal Oak and Beaver Lake) are located in the municipality of Saanich on the south end of the Saanich Peninsula. SIDES is a student-centered learning community providing high quality, flexible, full-service K-12 online learning to 3,000+ students (approximately 1,200 FTE) with diverse backgrounds and learning needs throughout BC and Canada. The Principal directs a staff of approximately 60 teachers, counselors and support staff.

The Saanich School District invites applications from qualified candidates for the Interim Vice Principal position, with assignment to SIDES, effective August 19, 2024. It is anticipated that this interim assignment will continue through to December 31, 2025. This interim assignment may end at a different date due to a change in the incumbent's return date or at the discretion of the Superintendent due to unforeseen circumstances.

Qualifications and Attributes

Outstanding leaders who wish to be considered must be eligible for membership within the BC Teacher Regulation Branch by holding a valid BC teaching certificate and have completed a Master's Degree with an emphasis in curriculum, administration, leadership, counselling or related field.

Applicants must also demonstrate an extensive background in instructional leadership and working with diverse learners including First Nations students and their families.

Skills and Qualities

A proven record of positive working relationships with students, parents, employee groups and the broader community;

Demonstrated understanding and respect for Indigenous learning and learners as well as knowledge of the W_SÁNEC First Nations;

Highly effective and respectful interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills;

Demonstrated understanding, support and leadership implementing the Ministry of Education and Child Care Digital Literacy Framework priorities;

Experienced or demonstrated interest in developing and leading online education programs;

Leadership promoting curriculum and current teaching pedagogy including the use of appropriate educational technology;

Creation of innovative practices within an inquiry-based teaching and learning environment;

Strong organizational and management skills;

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with leading initiatives in support of students with special needs;

Demonstrated excellence as a teacher and as an instructional leader at the school and district level;

Thorough understanding of effective assessment and evaluation practices.

Areas of Responsibility

Assisting the Principal in organization and development of the educational program in support of student achievement, including managing data and working on the School Plan.

Assisting the Principal in the vision, leadership, and development of exceptional educational school programs;

Shared management responsibilities within the school including some evening responsibilities
