(Job # Performing Arts Technician I, Scene Shop Technician, Hiring Range $3,623 - $3,804.: This is a temporary, intermittent hourly, non-benefitted, non-exempt position in Theater and Dance. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Position Summary: Under the immediate supervision of the Dance, Music, and Theatre Chair, faculty, and the Technical Director, the incumbent will assist with the day-to-day operation of the DMT Scene Shop and provide support to the Department's design faculty.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Help students apply classroom teaching in the Scene Shop. Support students in basic tool use (hammers, screw guns, etc.) and safety.
  • Run the more dangerous equipment (Table saw).
  • Oversee students as they assist in constructing stage sets out of wood, fabric, paint, etc.
  • Construct, rig, and paint scenery for department productions;
  • Build sets using standard carpentry skills,
  • Hang scenery from the stage fly system,
  • Paint scenery as per the designer's instructions.
  • Measure and mark cutting lines on materials, using a ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge.
  • Assemble and fasten materials to make frameworks, using hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
  • Study specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
  • Shape or cut materials (wood, metal, plastic) to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
  • Verify trueness of structure, using plumb bob and level.
  • Review blueprints or specifications to determine work requirements.
  • Rig scenic drops in Van Duzer Theatre fly system.
  • Assist in installing and taking up the dance floor when needed.
  • Collaborate with the technical director.
  • Perform or oversee other duties as assigned by the staff Technical Director.
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:

  • General knowledge of stage carpentry, the scenic craft, and rigging,
  • Working knowledge of design principles and the ability to translate design specifications, blueprints, or drawings into scenery.
  • Ability to read blueprints; working knowledge of carpentry and ability to apply knowledge to set and scenery construction; ability to mix and apply paint for sets and scenes; and ability to operate staging equipment.
  • Working knowledge of safety requirements and standards related to stage and set construction, lighting, and stage operations.
  • Ability to assist in the training and supervision of students involved in productions.
  • Requires skills related to the major responsibilities for the position include:
  • Ability to apply theatre safety practices.
  • Skill in the safe use of power tools and metal-working tools for fabrication.
  • Working Knowledge of plastics fabrication and operation of stage equipment and rigging.
  • Good communication and people skills and ability to work effectively with students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population.

Minimum Qualifications:

One to two years of experience constructing sets working for a theatre, repertory, or stock company.

This background normally would be achieved through professional training or applicable college coursework and practical experience.
