Camper Wellness Support Staff (Mental Health Support – Social Work or CYC Student)
Qualifications : Excellent leadership qualities, and good organization skills required. Currently pursuing or graduated with a degree in social work, child and youth care or relevant field. Experience working with children in an overnight/residential setting supporting their physical and mental health.
General : Reporting to the Camp Director, the Camper Wellness Support Staff works as a part of the health and wellness team and with the Section Heads and Cabin Leaders to monitor the mental, emotional and social health (MESH) and well-being of all campers. This includes providing a space for campers to take a break from the daily activities of camp, checking in with campers that have shown MESH concerns, collaborating on and implementing action plans to structure additional MESH support, supporting other staff and/or taking a lead in crisis intervention (especially as it relates to self-harm), recognizing when additional supports or interventions may be needed , and documenting any direct or indirect interventions.
Responsibilities:
Participate in mandatory staff training and develop a thorough understanding of the behavioral challenges and expectations of the campers Assist in providing health and wellness education to staff during orientation and training Observe and interact with campers and staff to promote a positive experience at camp. Develop strong work relationships with Cabin Leaders & Section Heads Work as a part of the Health & Wellness Team to ensure all health & wellness concerns of campers are supported Support for children with emotional needs and mental wellness, in collaboration with their Cabin Leaders, Section Heads and other members of the Health & Wellness Team Work one-on-one with campers who are experiencing difficulty participating in the program due to mental health and or other related concerns Support Section Head and assist in intervention of campers with discipline issues, prolonged moments of sadness, social challenges, and campers' inability to adjust to the camp environment. Help promote positive group conflict resolution amongst campers with the support of all necessary staff Provide support and guidance to staff as they intervene with camper concerns With Section Heads, support campers in situations that may arise during the camp that cause undue mental health concerns or pressure Consult and guide staff to monitor the overall emotional and social wellbeing of the community Keep the leadership of specific areas (health, community, camp) appropriately informed of situations or issues as they arise that may negatively affect community wellness Complete necessary paperwork within a reasonable amount of time Prepares donor thank you's Prepares year-end report at the conclusion of summer Other duties as assigned
