VM Administrator


Working within the IT Infrastructure department, this full-time permanent position will provide direct technical and administrative support to all aspects of Windows/Unix/Linux, VMWare, Backup and Recovery, Storage and On-prem/Cloud Datacenter Service environments for a multi-site 24-hour manufacturing environment.


The Sr VM Administrator is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware, software and related infrastructure, including participation in technical research and development to ensure security and stability by running technical control procedures to maintain quality standards.


What You'll Do

  • Responsible for general systems administration, including system configuration management, OS upgrades, security updates, and urgent system patching.
  • Work closely with Application Managers, Information Security, project managers, and software developers.
  • Determine requirements from other teams and direct Operating System, Database, Storage, and Network administrators to deliver the changes. i.e. additional SAN storage to expand volumes or replication of LUNs to disaster recovery site, firewall change requests, OS/DB security groups or layout of filesystems, etc.
  • Design and Create VDI infrastructure including network and systems diagrams.
  • Lead OS/middleware/hardware upgrade projects.
  • Monitor file systems, forecasting growth and tune server performance
  • Write Korn/Borne/Bash shell scripts for logging and transferring files leveraging SFTP/FTPS/MFT/eMFT.
  • Develop and maintain vCenter Orchestrator automated workflows
  • Provide support to maintain equipment and software maintenance records for replacement and/or repair of hardware and software under warranty coverage or under maintenance including vendor coordination.
  • Provide inputs to and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and documentation for scripts, programs, process flow, and system configurations
  • Raise Service Now Change requests and coordinate the change during the scheduled window.
  • Collaborate with IT personnel to prepare and maintain incident response, disaster recovery and business continuity plans and procedures including operational backup
  • Participate in oncall afterhours coverage including case of emergency issue resolution.
  • Optimize VMWare administration for hosting Windows/Linux VM Environment.

What You'll Need:

  • Post-Secondary degree or diploma in a technical field, such as Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Server administration and deployment
  • Preference will be given to individuals who have led teams of administrators in the past
  • Position requires an indepth understanding of VMware technologies, including vSphere/ESX, VMware View, vCenter, Site Recovery Manager, running in enterprise environments specifically in building and administering virtual infrastructure environments.
  • Experience working with backup and recovery solutions such as Backup Exec, CommVault, NetBackup, Veeam and/or Bacula/BareOS.
  • Familiarity with ITIL practices, such as change management, incident management, etc.
  • Ability to travel within Canada and the USA.
  • Ability to work afterhours and oncall on a regular basis.
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as Nagios, Solarwinds and Datadog is an asset
  • Experience in deployment and installation of physical datacenter hardware (servers, network, ups, etc)
  • Familiar with *Nix environment management through command line for: storage management, process management, network mounts, routing, firewall testing, security settings, performance monitoring.
