Indigenous Peer Support Worker

  • Preference will be given to individuals of First Nations ancestry (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment).
  • Previous experience or training in traditional/cultural healing services.
  • Knowledge of the people, culture, language, and health priorities of the First Nations communities.
  • A certificate, diploma, or degree in a healthrelated field is an assets.
  • Two years' experience in the health services field.
  • Background in teaching would be an asset.
  • Professional integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality are essential.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver's License.
  • Strong working knowledge and experience in time management, excellent organizational skills, as well as the ability to work independently.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance and support to the clients and facilitate access to traditional healing and other culturally appropriate programming.
  • Document services provided to clients and coordinate referrals to appropriate services.
  • Provide information and/or guidance regarding Traditional values and spirituality.
  • Maintain a standardized resource library or teaching materials.
  • Reinforce concepts of holistic health from an Indigenous perspective.
  • Consult with elders, traditional persons, healers, and medicine people concerning traditional medical practices and beliefs.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Supervisors and Project Leads to plan and organize community awareness initiatives on traditional beliefs and health practices, as requested by communities.
  • Promote crosscultural understanding and awareness among health professionals regarding traditional medicine.
  • Seek guidance from elders, herbalists, spiritual healers, and medicine people for the ongoing development of this initiative.
  • Perform any other duties as directed by the direct supervisor.
