Organization Background:

Humber Meadows Long-term Care Home (LTCH) is a 320 bed home located in Toronto. It is an independent, not-for-profit home with over 300 employees.

Humber Meadows was part of the rapid build initiative of the Government of Ontario, to increase the LTC bed capacity in Ontario as well as to support the modernization of care in LTC.

The home opened in June 2023. The Board of Directors currently has seven members and will be expanding to nine members by June 2024.

Description of Duties:

  • Serve as an advocate and ambassador for Humber Meadows LTCH
  • Provide oversight, to help guide the strategic direction and decisionmaking of the organization, ensuring that the organization is accountable to its purpose and operating ethically and responsibly
  • Develop and maintain sound relations and work cooperatively and respectfully with the Board Chair, members of the Board and senior management, while exercising independence in decisionmaking
  • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to achieve the mission and vision of Humber Meadows LTCH
  • Read and understand the financial statements of the organization and all board materials in advance of meetings
  • Prepare for, attend and actively participate in board meetings, offering constructive contributions to board and committee discussions
  • Contribute to the governance role of the board with their special expertise and skills
  • Adherence to all relevant legislation (Ministry of Long-Term Care, Ministry of Health etc.)
  • Accountability to Humber Meadows LTCH, its residents and the general public for competent, conscientious, and effective accomplishment of its obligations

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm and commitment to help Humber Meadows LTCH achieve its mission of "Working together to deliver innovative, safe and compassionate care to seniors."
  • Strong capacity to work collaboratively to problem solve, organize and deliver strategic advice and contribute as a member of a team working to achieve its mandate
  • Communication and interpersonal skills to interact pleasantly and professionally at all times
  • Have a basic understanding of the longterm care population and an interest in contributing to the delivery of quality care for residents and their families
  • Previous board experience in the notforprofit sector is preferred, but not required
  • This is a skills based board, ideally looking to fill skillset gaps in areas of Human Resources, Labour Relations, Legal (LLB), Medical and Communication/Public Relations; applicants with expertise or experience in other areas will still be considered.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to attend inperson board meetings, annual board retreat and fundraising events throughout the year
  • Commit the time required to perform Board and committee duties. The Board meets approximately 56 times a year; Additional hours may be required for subcommittees and fundraising events.
  • Must provide two character references
  • Must provide an acceptable Police Vulnerable Sector Check
