GENERAL STATEMENT
With the direct supervision of the Senior Laboratory Technologist, and in collaboration with faculty, prepares materials, supplies and equipment for laboratory teaching activities; provides technical support to instructors during the preparation and delivery of courses and other college-based activities; and works cooperatively with faculty and other lab technologists to optimize the operation and promotion of the department.
TYPICAL DUTIES
• Prepares solutions and media with appropriate accuracy and sterility using aseptic sub-culturing techniques;
• Prepares materials needed for laboratory exercises (as requested on laboratory preparation sheets);
• Organizes reagents, specimens, and equipment;
• Assists faculty in the planning of laboratory exercises, which includes planning technical requirements for lab exercises, so as to optimize the use of departmental resources;
• Maintains and may collect specimens (living and preserved) needed for various laboratory exercises;
• Assists in routine maintenance of lab equipment, purchasing of supplies and maintaining lab records, maintaining clean biology labs and prep area and animal and plant care;
• Follows WHMIS guidelines and handles, stores and disposes of chemicals and biological materials safely;
• May assist faculty during laboratory classes, field trips and other college based activities in a non-instructional role;
• Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity. Qualifications Two years of post secondary education in biology, or a specialized area of biology (plant and animal taxonomy, marine biology, BC biodiversity, molecular biology, tissue culturing), and two years of relevant laboratory experience including basic computer and mechanical skills or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The ability to multitask and work effectively as part of a team. Capabilities The core capabilities are required for all positions at the college.
