Main Purpose and Function
Age Friendly Services Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of comprehensive programs and services that are responsive and relevant for seniors. Work is administrative and specialized consultative work involving the planning, coordination, promotion, and implementation of Citywide programs, services, and policies. This position develops strategy and provides advice and resources to senior Recreation Division staff, Parks Board Commissioners, community groups, and other interested groups and agencies to advance this work.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, coordinates and evaluates recreational, wellness, social, cultural and educational programs and services that are inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of seniors and based on best practices, emerging trends, direct consultation, and program evaluation.
  • Performs duties consistent with the City's Corporate Priorities, Seniors Service and Age-Friendly Assessment and Action Plans.
  • Develops and implements a senior's strategy. Reviews and updates annually.
  • Collaborates with community agencies to reach seniors who are underserved, isolated and at-risk; to reduce barriers and increase access to community resources; and to develop, implement, and evaluate programs and services to meet their complex needs.
  • Works cooperatively with Community Center staff and associations, seniors and Elders organizations, and the public to understand community needs and interests regarding needs for older adults and Elders.
  • Develops, establishes, and evaluates City-wide standards for service, safety measures, programs and staff performance.
  • Researches and applies for funding opportunities. Administers and reports on granted funds appropriately following required timelines.
  • Sets goals within work plan consistent with the guiding principles for the City's Seniors Service and Age-friendly Assessment and Action Plans.
  • Develops a knowledge base of resources available in the community.
  • Solicits sponsors and publicly recognizes contributions.
  • Attends meetings, conferences and workshops as required; provide regular updates/reports
  • Presents seniors-related information and service needs to public groups, peers, staff, boards and the community.
  • Creates and distributes promotional, marketing, and educational materials using a variety of tools for seniors, caregivers, and families.
  • Empowers seniors to take an active role to share their knowledge and skills. Works in conjunction with City services to foster a positive image of seniors and to reduce stereotypes and ageism.
  • Supports in responding to all inquiries from the public and staff.
  • Deals with difficult and complex situations, requiring sound judgement and the ability to assess and respond accordingly. Articulates boundaries governing appropriate behaviour and use of facilities
  • Coordinates staff training opportunities for staff and volunteers
  • Formalizes a standard volunteer management system
  • Prepares budget estimates and monitors approved allocations; seeks alternative sources of funding for services and facilities.
  • Attends meetings as a representative of the department.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • University graduation in recreation, gerontology, or a related discipline, including or supplemented by courses in recreation education and business administration combined with management experience including responsibility for program coordination and staff supervision and development
  • Experience and/or education related to social work, mental health, addictions, healthy aging and informal counseling focused on the unique needs and capacities of older adults and Elders, or an equivalent combination, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the philosophy, objectives, principles and practices of public recreation and community development.
  • Thorough knowledge of the policies, rules, and regulations of the Park Board, the City and the Government of British Columbia, which pertain to the administration of recreation programs and services.
  • Considerable knowledge of the needs and interests of the community and of specialized resources, programs, and services.
  • Working knowledge of facilities, equipment, and safety factors involved in a wide variety of programs and activities.
  • Skills in the use of technology, and proficient in Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Ability to act as an effective advisor to groups or individuals.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain financial and administrative records and write reports.
  • Ability to speak effectively in public and to conduct meetings.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with civic officials, Park Board staff, representatives of concerned groups, and members of the public.
  • Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia.
