The Assistant Chief of Specialty Medicine (ACoM) is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction for the Medical Service as well as leadership to all clinical and administrative operations. The ACOM will collaborate with the Chief of Medicine to develop and implement strategies that enhance medical service, research, and education Responsibilities Duties Include: - Oversee the day-to-day operations of the medical services. - Overall leadership, policy, planning, budget, operations, and performance of the Medical Service. - Work cooperatively with other Service Chiefs, medical center management, and all staff of medical service. - Determine the number and type of specialized staff needed by Medicine Service to provide appropriate forms and level of patient. - Supervise section chiefs within the medical service and making sound decision on behalf of the Chief of Specialty Medicine. - Keep management and staff informed of relevant changes and events. - Lead or actively participate in various task groups and committees addressing clinical issues at local, VISN, and national VHA levels. - Responsible for performance management and quality improvement for clinical services. - Assess qualifications, competence, and productivity of clinical and administrative personnel. - Address performance and behavior problems in a timely and appropriate manner. - Collaborate with clinical and administrative service line leaders to implement policy, planning, and system redesign, and developing and implementing service-level and center-level policies and procedures. - Determine the needs of assigned veteran population for services within specialty area. - Provide orientation and continuing education opportunities to service staff and trainees and support research efforts. - Foster and maintain positive relationships with the University of Cincinnati and other affiliated institutions, educational programs, and contracts. - Act as liaison between the VA medical center and academic department at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine. - Evaluate clinical and administrative operations and develop a service-level quality improvement program. - Participate in QM/QI programs and establish benchmarks for quality of care. - Implement quality assurance programs, peer review, and performance reviews. - Work closely with credentialing, privileging, quality and patient safety, and other service lines to meet regulatory and procedural requirements.
