Fleet Replacement Programs are at the core of our modernization plan to improve connectivity across Canada. In 2022, VIA Rail launched a new generation of trains for the Quebec-Windsor corridor, transforming the travel experience for Canadians. This Quebec-Windsor corridor fleet replacement project continues successfully, and we are now ready to recruit a Director of Engineering Specialist to oversee the replacement program of our railway fleet for long-distance, regional, and remote connections (LDRE) and finalize the Quebec-Windsor corridor fleet program.

Under the supervision of the Vice President of New Fleet Programs, the Director of Engineering Specialist will be responsible for leading resources and ensuring the achievement and validation of engineering objectives for the LDRE fleet renewal program and the Quebec-Windsor corridor program. As a technical expert, he (she) will contribute to the development of systems engineering strategy and priority definition. The Director of Engineering Specialist will solve unique and complex problems that will have a significant impact on the program's direction. Get ready to join this new adventure with us

Responsibilities:
  1. Support the negotiation team before the development of terms and technical evaluation and during the negotiation phase with the supplier;
  2. Attest and communicate the guidelines advocated by VIA Rail to suppliers and external consultants assigned to professional services related to the project;
  3. Act as the main point of contact for internal stakeholders specialized in various disciplines;
  4. Ensure that the fleet supplier proposes a design that ensures satisfaction of technical requirements and constraints;
  5. Validate that the fleet supplier meets regulatory certification requirements specified by TC and host railways and ensure their acceptance;
  6. Participate in defining interfaces with maintenance workshops, infrastructure, as well as maintenance management and operation;
  7. Support qualification tests and the commissioning process;
  8. Establish a technical team to support the program from program launch to end of warranty.
Requirements:
  • University degree in Engineering;
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in technical management and Systems Engineering;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as presentation skills, in both French and English, particularly with senior management members;
  • Proficiency in engineering software, project management, and the Microsoft Office suite;
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies;
  • Profound skills in systems analysis;
  • Strong familiarity with standards and regulations;
  • Previous experience in the railway industry (an asset).

  • Technical Expertise: A solid understanding of engineering principles and practices in the specific field;
  • Leadership: Capable of influencing, mobilizing, and guiding others towards common goals;
  • Project Management: Solid experience in engineering project management, including planning, execution, monitoring and controlling projects, resource management, scheduling, and budgeting;
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to solve complex problems and make strategic decisions to overcome technical obstacles;
  • Change Management: Excellent organizational and planning skills to effectively manage change and deliver results in a dynamic and evolving environment;
  • Results Orientation: Ability to set clear goals, track progress, and take corrective actions to ensure the achievement of results;
  • Strategic Leadership: The ability to think strategically and align engineering objectives with the organization's overall goals.
