Our client is a multi-disciplinary engineering firm, offering services related to structural, environmental, forensics, fire investigations, mechanical, & building science engineering.


We are looking to hire a Forensic Investigator Manager to join their dynamic team of engineers and technicians. This person will lead a team of investigators in conducting on-site assessments to determine the origin and cause of fires and explosions.


We are looking for a seasoned leader with established contacts in the industry to grow this department of the organization. The manager will ensure investigations follow established fire investigation methodologies (NFPA 1033 and 921). This involves identifying, preserving, and collecting evidence on-site, as well as conducting both non-destructive and destructive examinations in a controlled laboratory setting. The role requires using scientific methods to develop and test hypotheses, preparing technical reports, and maintaining effective communication with clients, contractors, and in-house staff. We are looking for someone who is willing to spend time at the company’s office in Toronto and build an effective and engaging team.


Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage on-site assessments and analyses of properties affected by fire, explosion, mechanical, and structural failures.
  • Lead and manage team, assisting with department strategic direction.
  • Help grow department in terms of revenue and claims.
  • Assist in establishing policy, procedure and protocol and assisting with keeping the group at the forefront of the industry.
  • Liaise effectively with stakeholders such as public safety officials, police, fire departments, insurance companies, lawyers, media, and the general public.
  • Convey technical information, including the application of legislation or fire investigation findings, to stakeholders.
  • Execute research and collect data and evidence to support investigative findings.
  • Determine the origin and cause of fires/explosions and the root cause of failures.
  • Present findings both orally and in writing in an objective and impartial manner.
  • Oversee the preparation of technical reports and documentation of investigative files.
  • Conduct interviews with homeowners, witnesses, police or fire department staff, laboratory technicians, etc.
  • Assist and conduct joint investigations with outside agencies and parties.
  • Ensure continued communication of the investigative file's progression and key deliverables with clients, contractors, and in-house staff.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5-10 years of working experience in forensic investigation, with at least 3-5 years of management experience.
  • CFI or CFEI certifications are required– others such as CFII, CVFI, F-IAFI, WETT are an asset.
  • In-depth knowledge of fire investigation methods, strategies, techniques, and theories.
  • Experience with investigating explosion scenes and determining the cause and origin of fires.
  • Proven managerial experience leading investigative teams.
  • Understanding of fire dynamics, combustion chemistry, and scientific/technical principles (e.g., flash points, vapor density, ignition temperatures).
  • Ability to manage large and small projects with multiple parties and coordination of information from various disciplines.
  • Knowledge of court proceedings, including criminal investigations and rules of evidence, to gather evidence and provide expert testimony.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Strong analytical skills to quantify damages and determine causes of loss.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including databases, word processing, and spreadsheets.
  • Effective project and time management skills to prepare reports and communicate with staff and clients.
